In the past decade, numerous machine learning algorithms have been shown to successfully learn optimal policies to control real robotic systems. However, it is common to encounter failing behaviors as the learning loop progresses.Specifically, in robot applications where failing is undesired but not catastrophic, many algorithms struggle with leveraging data obtained from failures. This is usually caused by (i) the failed experiment ending prematurely, or (ii) the acquired data being scarce or corrupted. ...

Bayesian optimization is proposed for automatic learning of optimal controller parameters from experimental data. A probabilistic description (a Gaussian process) is used to model the unknown function from controller parameters to a user-defined cost. The probabilistic model is updated with data, which is obtained by testing a set of parameters on the physical system and evaluating the cost. In order to learn fast, the Bayesian optimization algorithm selects the next parameters to evaluate in a systematic ...

Abstract Apomicts tend to have larger geographical distributional ranges and to occur in ecologically more extreme environments than their sexual progenitors. However, the expression of apomixis is typically linked to polyploidy. Thus, it is a priori not clear whether intrinsic effects related to the change in the reproductive mode or rather in the ploidy drive ecological differentiation. We used sympatric sexual and apomictic populations of Potentilla puberula to test for ecological differentiation. ...

Using interviews and questionnaires, we explored the perceptions and attitudes of 49 Spanish science journalists regarding pseudoscience. Pseudoscience, understood as false knowledge that endeavours to pass as science, is a controversial and complex matter that potentially poses a risk to society. Given that concern over this issue has grown in recent years in Spain, our aim was to evaluate how pseudoscience operates in journalistic practice in Spanish media. Our data reveal not only a lack of editorial ...

This paper presents a study of the losses in the integrated buck-flyback converter (IBFC) used as high-power-factor LED driver. The aim of the study is to investigate the possibilities of increasing the efficiency of the IBFC converter. The procedure of the improvement is done by obtaining the equations of the current through each component in terms of converter parameters. The current is found in an average value or rms value, depending on the type of the parasitic component, whether it is modeled ...

In this article, a high-power-density off-line light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed. The proposed ac-dc driver is the novel integrated buck and boost converter (IBBC). Besides the high-power-density, the converter shows a high power factor (PF), and a low total harmonic distortion (THD). The IBBC is a two-stage driver that features just one controlled switch, which leads to high PF and low THD operation ensuring high efficiency, and size and cost reduction. Moreover, the switch current is minimized ...

This paper investigates the integrated buck-flyback converter (IBFC) as a good solution for implementing low-cost high-power-factor ac–dc converters with fast output regulation. It will be shown that, when both buck and flyback semistages are operated in discontinuous conduction mode, the voltage across the bulk capacitor, which is used to store energy at low frequency, is independent of the output power. This makes it possible to maintain the bulk capacitor voltage at a low value within the whole line ...

This paper presents a comparative analysis and experiments of resonant tanks for magnetically controlled electronic ballasts, focusing on their behavior and performance when driving hot cathode fluorescent lamps. Four different resonant tanks are analyzed: LC, LCC, capacitive impedance inverter, and CLL. The analysis is performed using a 36-W fluorescent lamp, which has been previously tested and modeled experimentally. The lamp model is used to derive the dimming characteristics of the different resonant ...

In this paper, a new control method for electronic ballasts based on the use of a variable inductor is presented. The main goal is to perform the complete control of the electronic ballast by maintaining the switching frequency constant and without using other parameters of the power converter, such as input voltage or duty cycle. The magnetic regulator is controlled by means of a dc current, which allows performing both lamp soft starting and lamp dimming. Apart from the important advantage of keeping ...

Nowadays, there are few commercial types of ballasts that are able to control fluorescent lamps with different power ratings. One of the main issues is how to get optimum operation for each lamp in this condition. This paper tries to demonstrate how to accomplish this objective using a magnetic regulator, i.e., using a variable inductor. This variable inductor is controlled by a dc current delivered by a forward converter directly supplied from the ballast dc bus voltage. This control current allows changing ...

A dc voltage source with a series resistor is used to supply the lamp at the required power level. Then, the lamp response against an input voltage step transient is analyzed. From this analysis, the parameters of the equivalent lamp model can be calculated. The proposed method allows obtaining the lamp model in a straight manner from a single test. With this ...

A new control method for electronic ballasts based on magnetic regulators is presented. The proposed method allows starting and dimming the lamp at constant frequency by adjusting the inductance of the resonant tank. The main advantages are inherent galvanic isolated control, more linear control characteristics, lower EMI, and high efficiency in the whole dimming range. Analysis and experimental results from a 36 W linear fluorescent lamp prototype are presented.

The most remarkable feature of these compounds is the presence of the N–O bond framed in a cyclic moiety.
