Nowadays there are few commercial types of ballasts able to control fluorescent lamps with different power ratings. This study presents a high power factor (PF) light-emitting diode (LED) driver featuring a pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming technique. The integrated buck-flyback-buck converter (IBFBC) is built by connecting a buck converter to the integrated buck-flyback converter's output. A simple method to obtain the dynamic behaviour of discharge lamps is proposed. A DC voltage source with a series resistor is used to supply the lamp at the required power level. The lamp response against an input voltage step transient is then analysed. From this analysis, the parameters of the equivalent lamp model can easily be obtained. The present article aims to point out the urgent need of making an effort in order to face the threats of pseudoscience, threats that increase if we pay attention to its incorporation as media contents. From a transversal point of view, including communication theories, science epistemology and journalism ethics, the authors propose a new definition of pseudoscience and indicate different courses of action that can help to delimit and establish this specific object of study.
