This work evaluated the performance of double-stage integrated filtration systems using membranes. The integrated systems comprise the sequential use of microfiltration (MF) plus nanofiltration (NF) and MF plus reverse osmosis (RO) under different pressures for treating dairy wastewater. The MF + NF system reduced 100% turbidity, 96% color, 58% total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and 51% chemical oxygen demand. The MF + RO system reduced 100% turbidity, 100% color, 94% TKN and 84% total organic carbon. Therefore, ...

Dairy industry wastewater contains high levels of organic matter, consisting mainly of fat, protein and products of their partial microbial decomposition. In the present study, the use of continuous electrocoagulation is proposed for the primary treatment of dairy wastewater. The electrochemical treatment was carried out in a continuous flow cell with aluminum electrodes. The influence of the voltage, the distance between the electrodes and the hydraulic residence time (HRT) on the process performance ...

This work is focused on the synthesis of the fructooligosaccharides (FOS) from sucrose and inulin, using free, immobilized and pre-treated immobilized inulinase from Kluyveromyces marxianus NRRL Y 7571 and Aspergillus niger in an aqueous–organic system. Initially, the influence of pre-treatment using four different gases, propane, n-butane, CO2 and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), was investigated towards FOS production and best results were found when both enzymes were previously treated with LPG. ...

The pyrometallurgic process that the exhausted batteries are submitted for the recovery of metallic lead generates great amount of a by-product called slag. The slag is composed mainly of iron (≈60%) and lead (≈6%), and this residue cannot be disposed in conventional landfill due to the high lead content. This work presents a new methodology for the extraction of lead from slag, based on the complexing effect of EDTA, a chelating ligand that has the ability to solubilize several heavy metals. As the ...

The main objective of this work was to investigate the effect of acid activation on the adsorption ability of synthesized double layered hydroxides (DLH) for fluoride ions present in aqueous solution. Samples of DLH synthesized presented an enhancement of adsorption capacity for fluorides related to their precursors, a consequence of substitution of CO32– anions (after acid degradation) present on the DLH structure by monovalent anions (chloride and formate) that are more easily interchangeable compared ...

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) are amphiphilic compounds with wide range of applications such as emulsifiers, solubility agents, and chiral building blocks. These compounds are currently produced by chemical approaches involving alkaline glycerolysis or esterification under high temperatures and pressure, resulting in low yields and with by-products. Lipase-catalyzed processes have been alternative tools to provide more ecological approaches since MAGs can be obtained under milder reaction conditions and ...
