We studied proton dynamics of a hydrogen bonds of the crystalline l-ascorbic acid. Our approach was based on the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. The focal point of our study was simulation of the infrared spectra of l-ascorbic acid associated with the O-H stretching modes that are very sensitive to the strength of hydrogen bonding. In the l-ascorbic acid there are four kinds of hydrogen bonds. We calculated their spectra by using anharmonic approximation and the time course of the dipole moment ...

The nature of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in oxalic acid dihydrate in the crystal phase was examined by infrared spectroscopy and Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics simulation. We studied region of infrared spectra associated with the O—H modes. The spectra were calculated using harmonic approximation with crystal field and time course of the dipole moment as obtained from Car–Parrinello simulation with quantization of the O—H motion, and isotopic substitution. We obtained good agreement ...

The interaction energies, structures and vibrational band wavenumbers of the binary complexes formed between water and carbon oxysulfide, and water and nitrous oxide, have been predicted by means of ab initio molecular orbital theory. The results are discussed in the light of high resolution gas phase infrared and microwave, and matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic studies, and of previous theoretical calculations on similar and containing carbon dioxide complexes.

Dinucleotide analogs of the messenger RNA cap (m7GpppN) are useful research tools and have potential applications as translational inhibitors or reagents for modification of in vitro transcribed mRNAs. It has been previously reported that replacing the methyl group at the N7-position with benzyl (Bn) produces a dinucleotide cap with superior properties. Here, we followed up on this finding by synthesizing 17 novel Bn7GpppG analogs and determining their structure-activity relationship regarding translation ...

Despite many years having passed since it was discovered, FeTi alloys remain one of the most important low-temperature hydrogen storage alloys due to its high capacity, characteristics and low price. However, the main technological issue is its initial activation, which is usually conducted at relatively high temperature and pressure. This paper is the first to show that the complicated process can be replaced by intense movement of the powder or even chunks of alloy under hydrogen pressure without ...

We studied the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on human blood platelet function. We hypothesized that AgNPs, a known antimicrobial agent, can be used as blood-compatible, "ideal material'' in medical devices or as a drug delivery system. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate if functionalized AgNPs affect platelet function and platelets as well as endothelial cell viability in vitro.AgNPs, functionalized with reduced glutathione (GSH), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and lipoic ...

Mutations in the BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 genes are well-established risk factors for the development of breast and/or ovarian cancer. The frequency and spectrum of mutations in these genes has not yet been examined in the population of Southern Poland. We examined the entire coding sequences of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and genotyped a recurrent mutation of the PALB2 gene (c.509_510delGA) in 121 women with familial and/or early-onset breast or ovarian cancer from Southern Poland.A BRCA1 mutation was ...

The medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC) and rostral part of anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) have been suggested to be involved in the neural network of salience and emotional processing, and associated with specific clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. Considering the schizophrenia dysconnectivity hypothesis, the connectivity abnormalities between mOFC and rACC might be associated with clinical characteristics in first episode schizophrenia patients (FESZ). After parcellating mOFC into the anterior ...

We examined the effects of lovastatin, a common anti‐atherosclerotic drug and a blocker of the cell cycle, on the process of mitosis. It is known that lovastatin induces an arrest or a retardation of the cell cycle in many cell types not only at the G 1 phase, but also at the G 2 /M transition. After 24–48h incubation of epithelial PtK 2 , T24, HeLa cells and fibroblastic L929 cells in the presence of 1.0–60.0μm lovastatin, diverse mitotic perturbations have been observed. The most noteworthy phenomena ...

Visually responding neurons in the superficial, retinorecipient layers of the cat superior colliculus receive input from two primarily parallel information processing channels, Y and W, which is reflected in their velocity response profiles. We quantified the time-dependent variability of responses of these neurons to stimuli moving with different velocities by Fano factor (FF) calculated in discrete time windows. The FF for cells responding to low-velocity stimuli, thus receiving W inputs, increased ...

Polygoni cuspidati root is a resveratrol-rich source with anti-inflammatory, angiogenic and neuroprotective effects. The raw material was standardized for the content of resveratrol, for which there is a special justification for administration within the oral mucosa. Abstract Proton dynamics of hydrogen bonds (HBs) in the α and γ form of Nylon 6 were investigated by Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD). Our results show differences in the dynamic effects of interchain HB interactions between the α form and the γ form of Nylon 6. Analysis of the time course of the geometrical parameters of HBs along the BOMD simulations has shown that HBs are dynamically favored in the γ form of Nylon. The quantization of the NH stretching mode enables a detailed discussion ...

Infantile hypercalcaemia (IH) is a vitamin D3 metabolism disorder. The molecular basis for IH is biallelic mutations in the CYP24A1 or SLC34A1 gene. These changes lead to catabolism disorders (CYP24A1 mutations) or excessive generation of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] (SLC34A1 mutations). The incidence rate of IH in children and the risk level for developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are still unknown. The aim of this study was to analyse the long-term outcome of adolescents and young adults ...

One of the causes of therapeutic failure of chemotherapy is cancer cell resistance. In the case of anthracyclines, many resistance mechanisms have been described. One of them assumes the role of carbonyl reductase 1 (CBR1), a cytosolic enzyme that is responsible for the biotransformation process of anthracyclines to less active, undesirable metabolites. Therefore, CBR1 inhibitors are considered for use as a chemosensitizing agents. In the present study, piperlongumine (PL), a Piper longum L. alkaloid ...

Boron nitride films were grown on 2-inch sapphire substrates using the MOCVD technique. The growth was performed using a pulsed source injection mode with triethylborane (TEB) and ammonia (NH3) with a high V/III ratio, which corresponds to the self-terminated growth mode. Two different carrier gases, H2 and Ar, were used to investigate their influence on the growth mechanism, while all the other growth parameters were kept the same. The BN films thus obtained were examined using XRR, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy, ...

Idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia (IIH) is a mineral metabolism disorder characterized by severe hypercalcemia, failure to thrive, vomiting, dehydration, and nephrocalcinosis. The periodical increase in incidence of IIH, which occurred in the twentieth century in the United Kingdom, Poland, and West Germany, turned out to be a side effect of rickets over-prophylaxis. It was recently discovered that the condition is linked to two genes, CYP24A1 and SLC34A1. The aim of the study was to search for ...

Analysis of the geometrical parameters of hydrogen bonds using BOMD reveals significant differences in hydrogen bonding between the two crystalline forms of aspirin, Form I and Form II. Analysis of the trajectory for Form I shows spontaneous proton transfer in cyclic dimers, which is absent in Form II. Quantization of the O-H stretching ...
