Abstract Mouse Ly-6 proteins are characterized by lineage-restricted patterns of expression on lymphoid cells. A mAb (1A8) was produced to Ly-6G, a newly described member of the Ly-6 locus. Based on selective reactivity to cloned Ly-6 gene products expressed in EL4J cells, 1A8 was determined to be specific for Ly-6G. Furthermore, mAb to other Ly-6 specificities did not bind to Ly-6G-transfected EL4J cells, indicating that Ly-6G is distinct from other serologically defined Ly-6 specificities. FACS ...

Summary Background In 2010, overweight and obesity were estimated to cause 3·4 million deaths, 3·9% of years of life lost, and 3·8% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) worldwide. The rise in obesity has led to widespread calls for regular monitoring of changes in overweight and obesity prevalence in all populations. Comparable, up-to-date information about levels and trends is essential to quantify population health effects and to prompt decision makers to prioritise action. We estimate the global, ...

Importance Tobacco is a leading global disease risk factor. Understanding national trends in prevalence and consumption is critical for prioritizing action and evaluating tobacco control progress. Objective To estimate the prevalence of daily smoking by age and sex and the number of cigarettes per smoker per day for 187 countries from 1980 to 2012. Design Nationally representative sources that measured tobacco use (n = 2102 country-years of data) were systematically identified. Survey data that did not report ...

Although there have been many advances in end-user programming environments, recent empirical studies report that programming still remains difficult for end-users. We hypothesize that one reason may be lack of effective support for helping end-user programmers problem-solve their own way around barriers they encounter. Therefore, in this paper, we describe the Idea Garden, a concept designed to help end-user programmers generate new ideas and problem-solve when they run into barriers. The Idea ...

A novel paper composite with high photocatalytic performance was fabricated using natural zeolite (clinoptilolite)-based nanosized TiO2. Photocatalytic materials, from sol–gel derived TiO2 colloids to its coupling with zeolite, have been designed, prepared and characterized. As-prepared anatase TiO2 on zeolite particles were readily used in photocatalytic paper, which revealed zeolite-TiO2 particles dispersed on a dense network of fibers with microvoids. Natural zeolite-based TiO2 composite sheets ...

To the Editor.— The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in child-bearing women impacts our society in a number of ways. One of these is the legacy of uninfected children left without their mothers when these women succumb to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We have calculated a crude estimate of the current and future number of these AIDS orphans. As of December 31, 1991, 21 225 women (≥13 years of age) with AIDS were reported to the Centers for Disease Control from the United States, ...

Primary biliary cirrhosis is a chronic cholestatic disease, thought to be immune-mediated with genetic susceptibility encoded in the major histocompatibility complex. In northern Europeans, the best established associations are with HLA-DR8 and the complement allele, C4B2. These associations could be due to a single susceptibility locus on an extended haplotype linking HLA-DR8 and C4B2 or to both HLA-DR8 and C4B2 independently conferring disease susceptibility. C4B2 genotyping was performed on 64 ...

Hypoxia is an environmental stress encountered by Aspergillus fumigatus during invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). The ability of this mold to adapt to hypoxia is important for fungal virulence and genetically regulated in part by the sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP) SrbA. SrbA is required for fungal growth in the murine lung and to ultimately cause lethal disease in murine models of IPA. Here we identified and partially characterized four genes (dscA, dscB, dscC, and dscD, here ...
