RGB-D cameras provide 3-D body joint data in a low-cost, portable and non-intrusive way, when compared with reference motion capture systems used in laboratory settings. In this contribution, we evaluate the validity of both Microsoft Kinect versions (v1 and v2) for motion analysis against a Qualisys system in a simultaneous protocol. Two different walking directions in relation to the Kinect (towards – WT, and away – WA) were explored. For each gait trial, measures related with all body parts were computed: ...

Nanotechnology has had a significant impact on medicine in recent years, its application being referred to as nanomedicine. Nanoparticles have certain properties with biomedical applications; however, in some situations, they have demonstrated cell toxicity, which has caused concern surrounding their clinical use. In this review, we focus on two aspects: first, we summarize the types of nanoparticles according to their chemical composition and the general characteristics of their use in medicine, ...

Abstract The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing ...

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder which affects 0.5–1% of the world population. Its diagnosis relies both on Electroencephalogram (EEG) findings and characteristic seizure−induced body movements − called seizure semiology. Thus, synchronous EEG and (2D)video recording systems (known as Video−EEG) are the most accurate tools for epilepsy diagnosis. Despite the establishment of several quantitative methods for EEG analysis, seizure semiology is still analyzed by visual inspection, based on epileptologists’ ...

Maude is a declarative and reflective language based on rewriting logic in which computation corresponds to efficient deduction by rewriting. Because of its reflective capabilities, Maude has been useful as a metatool in the development of formal analysis tools for checking specific properties of Maude specifications. This includes tools for checking termination, confluence, and inductive properties of rewrite theories. Nevertheless, most of these tools have been designed to work in isolation, making ...

The landing obligation policy was one of the major innovations introduced in the last Common Fisheries Policy reform in Europe. It is foreseen that the policy will affect the use of fishing opportunities and hence the economic performance of the fleets. The problem with fishing opportunities could be solved if single-stock total allowable catches (TACs) could be achieved simultaneously for all the stocks. In this study, we evaluate the economic impact of the landing obligation policy on the Spanish ...

Pulse fishing may be a global optimal strategy in multicohort fisheries. In this article we compare pulse fishing solutions obtained by using global numerical methods with the analytical stationary optimal solution. This allows us to quantify the potential benefits associated with the use of periodic fishing in the Northern Stock of Hake. Results show first that management plans based exclusively on traditional reference targets such as Fmsy may drive economic results for fisheries far away from ...

Optimal management in a multi-cohort Beverton-Holt model with any number of age classes and imperfect selectivity is equivalent to finding the optimal fish lifespan by chosen fallow cycles. Optimal policy differs in two main ways from the optimal lifespan rule with perfect selectivity. First, weight gain is valued in terms of the whole population structure. Second, the cost of waiting is the interest rate adjusted for the increase in the pulse length. This point is especially relevant for assessing ...

The adoption of water-saving practices in rice cultivation modifies soil water tension regime, then influencing accumulation of chemical elements in rice grains. Some studies report higher concentrations of arsenic (As) in rice grains produced in anaerobic soils, compared to those produced in aerobic soils. However, there is a lack of information about the association between water stress imposed at distinct phenological phases of rice and the accumulation of chemical elements in grains. The aim ...

Understanding how the immune response is activated and amplified requires detailed knowledge of the stages in the formation of the immunological synapse (IS) between T lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells (APCs). We show that tetraspanins CD9 and CD151 congregate at the T-cell side of the IS. Silencing of CD9 or CD151 blunts the IL-2 secretion and expression of the activation marker CD69 by APC-conjugated T lymphocytes, but does not affect the accumulation of CD3 or actin to the IS, or the translocation ...

Nuclear lamins A/C control several critical cellular functions, e.g., chromatin organization, gene transcription, DNA replication, DNA damage responses, cell cycle progression, cell differentiation, and cell polarization during migration. However, few studies have addressed the role of lamins A/C in the control of the functions of immune cells. Recently, we have demonstrated that lamins A/C are induced in T cells upon antigen recognition. Lamins A/C enhance T cell responses by coupling the plasma ...
