Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are a promising technology for treating wastewater in a sustainable manner. In potential applications, low temperatures substantially reduce MFC performance. To better understand the effect of temperature and particularly how bioanodes respond to changes in temperature, we investigated the current generation of mixed-culture and pure-culture MFCs at two low temperatures, 10°C and 5°C. The results implied that the mixed-culture MFC sustainably performed better than the ...

Mouthguards are frequently used for protection purposes, particularly by athletes competing in contact sports. However, there is increasing evidence supporting their use for improving performance. Studies have focused their use in athletes who do not traditionally use mouthguards and who may be looking for a performance edge. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of a custom-made mouthguard (Parabite Malpezzi, PM) on maximal and submaximal physiological parameters related to ...

Introduction Running races on mountain trails at moderate-high altitude with large elevation changes throughout has become increasingly popular. During exercise at altitude, ventilatory demands increase due to the combined effects of exercise and hypoxia. Aim To investigate the relationships between thoraco-abdominal coordination, ventilatory pattern, oxygen saturation (SpO2), and endurance performance in runners during high-intensity uphill exercise. Calculation of energy performance of buildings is defined by European standards in accordance with the Directive 2010/31/EU (EPBD). One of the main goals of the Directive 2010/31/EU is the decrease of energy consumption in the buildings. Standard EN ISO 13790 prescribes the methodology of calculations of energy performance of buildings. The input data for the calculation and their interpretation are defined by European standards related to EN ISO 13790. Climate parameters are defined based on meteorological ...

Abstract Hydroxylherderite, Ca 2 Be 2 P 2 O 8 (OH) 2 , is among the most common beryllophosphates in nature and could play a substantial role in Be geochemical cycle. Hydroxylherderite P–T stability and crystal structure behavior were studied under extreme conditions (up to 750°C/100 GPa) using in situ single‐crystal and powder X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The mineral demonstrated high stability under high‐pressure conditions (up to ∼100 GPa) without any phase transitions. Under high‐temperature ...

Three facultative anaerobic acidotolerant Gram-negative motile spirilla strains designated 26-4b1, 26-2 and K-1 were isolated from mesotrophic Siberian fen as a component of methanogenic consortia. The isolates were found to grow chemoorganotrophically on several organic acids and glucose under anoxic and low oxygen pressure in the dark, tolerant up to 5 kPa of oxygen. At low oxygen supply, faint autotrophic growth on the H2:CO2 mixture was also observed. All three isolates were able to fix N2. ...

To predict the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), information regarding the immunological memory for disease-specific antigens is necessary. The possibility of reinfection, as well as the efficacy of vaccines for COVID-19 that are currently under development, will largely depend on the quality and longevity of immunological memory in patients. To elucidate the process of humoral immunity development, we analysed the generation of plasmablasts and virus receptor-binding domain (RBD)-specific ...

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are acknowledged as a promising template for designing new antimicrobials. At the same time, existing toxicity issues and limitations in their pharmacokinetics make topical application one of the less complicated routes to put AMPs-based therapeutics into actual medical practice. Antiseptics are one of the common components for topical treatment potent against antibiotic-resistant pathogens but often with toxicity limitations of their own. Thus, the interaction of AMPs ...

Background. The incidence of isolated oligohydramnios in a full-term pregnancy is 0.5–5%. Isolated oligohydramnios is usually associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, the choice of optimal management of patients with isolated oligohydramnios is an actual task of modern obstetrics. Objective. The ...
