Rectal bleeding is frequently seen in patients undergoing transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. This report details a case of life-threatening rectal bleeding following this procedure which was successfully treated by means of endoscopic sclerotherapy. The aim of this report is to share our experience of the management of massive rectal bleeding following prostate biopsy.

Mucormycosis is usually an acute angioinvasive infections, which leads to non-suppurative necrosis and significant tissue damage. It represents 1.6% of all the invasive fungal infections and predominates in immunosuppressed patients with risk factors. Incidence has been significantly increased even in immunocompetent patients. Due to finding a case of disseminated mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a young immunocompetent patient, a systematic review was carried out of reported cases ...

Little is known about cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection after face transplantation, since only two of the 11 cases of face transplantation reported worldwide have documented a CMV infection after transplantation. Herein, we present the first report of a composite-tissue face allotransplant recipient at high risk for CMV infection (D(+)/R(-) [CMV serpositive donor positive/CMV seronegative receptor]) undergoing preemptive treatment. Preemptive treatment was safe and effective for controlling CMV infection ...

Poor outcomes of invasive candidiasis (IC) are associated with the difficulty in establishing the microbiological diagnosis at an early stage. New scores and laboratory tests have been developed in order to make an early therapeutic intervention in an attempt to reduce the high mortality associated with invasive fungal infections. Candida albicans IFA IgG has been recently commercialized for germ tube antibody detection (CAGTA). This test provides a rapid and simple diagnosis of IC (84.4% sensitivity ...

Clinical Knowledge-Management (KM) represents a specific category of KM that requires specific support. Clinical knowledge mixes formal scientific knowledge with a person-culture in which the expertise of clinicians is key. In KM life-cycles, this entails that the required processes associated to clinical knowledge diverge from other kind of activities. Further, the technological support required for clinical knowledge assets is multi-perspective. This paper deals with those differences from the ...

The increasing pressure to decrease organic solvent usage in laboratories is fostering the search for alternative solvents. The liquid–liquid phase separation of surfactants, induced by environmental conditions, viz. temperature, electrolytes, pH, etc., has been largely used in analytical extraction and concentration schemes. The surfactant-rich phase is a nano-structured liquid, recently named as supramolecular solvent, generated from the amphiphiles through a sequential self-assembly process occurring ...

A simple, sensitive, rapid and economic method was developed for the quantification of enantiomers of chiral pesticides as mecoprop (MCPP) and dichlorprop (DCPP) in soil samples using supramolecular solvent-based microextraction (SUSME) combined with liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). SUSME has been described for the extraction of chiral pesticides in water, but this is firstly applied to soil samples. MCPP and DCPP are herbicides widely used in agriculture that have two ...

Halogen bonding (XB), a highly energetic and directional interaction, is here proposed as a new mechanism to increase solute solubilisation in solvent extractions. The approach is illustrated by the extraction of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) enantiomers in soils and sediments using supramolecular solvents (SUPRAS) containing XB donors in their structure. SUPRAS consisting of inverted hexagonal aggregates of decanoic acid, synthesized by water-induced coacervation of the amphiphile in tetrahydrofuran ( ...

Mucormycosis infections are rare in immunocompetent patients, and very few cases of mucormycosis associated with aspergillosis in non-haematological patients have been reported.A 17-year-old male, immunocompetent and without any previously known risk factors, was admitted to hospital due to a seizure episode 11 days after a motorcycle accident. He had a complicated clinical course as he had a mixed invasive fungal infection with pulmonary involvement due to Aspergillus niger and disseminated mucormycosis ...

Background: A third line treatment is needed in roughly 5% of patients infected with Helicobacter pylori . Few data have been reported on efficacy of treatment regimens in these patients. Methods: A prospective trial was designed to study the effectiveness of third line treatment of H. pylori infection in ulcer patients. Two‐week quadruple, culture‐guided, combinations were used in 31 consecutive patients. Susceptibility to metronidazole and clarithromycin were studied by E ‐test, and thereafter a ...

Completeness of e-learning objects metadata records becomes a key requirement for learning object repositories, since these repositories are called to play a central role in automated approaches to e-learning. Nonetheless, metadata creation is a time-consuming and laborious process. These two factors may eventually result in incomplete and poorly structured metadata. In this paper, the completeness of learning object metadata of samples obtained from the MERLOT and CAREO repositories is analysed ...

A single-step, environmentally friendly sample treatment was developed and used in combination with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the quantitation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) stereoisomers in fish. It was based on the microextraction of the stereoisomers with a supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) made up of reverse aggregates of decanoic acid (DeA). The procedure involved the stirring of the fish sample (750 mg) with 600 μL of SUPRAS for five minutes, subsequent centrifugation ...

Liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) techniques have experienced a tremendous growth over the last years but still face major challenges related to the use of more efficient and environmentally friendly solvents. This paper was intended to make greener both SUPRAS formation and ...

A supramolecular solvent made up of vesicles of decanoic acid in the nano- and microscale regimes dispersed in a continuous aqueous phase is proposed for the extraction/preconcentration of benzimidazolic fungicides (BFs) from river and underground water samples prior to their determination by liquid chromatography (LC)/fluorimetry.
