To compare the early and intermediate results of the open and laparoscopic tension-free repair of incisional hernia, 24 patients were randomized prospectively to undergo laparoscopic or open repair of incisional hernia with retromuscular placement of the prosthesis using transabdominal sutures for mesh fixation. All the procedures were completed as planned. The mean duration of surgery was not significantly different between the 2 groups (P=0.15). Time to oral solid food intake was longer in the ...

During decades, both aetiology and treatment in Depressive Disorders relied on neurotransmisors' physiopathology or on abnomalities in their receptors function. However, recently evidences from research on neurobiological grounds suggest that there are multiple and complex systems involved in the pathophysiology of Depressive Disorders.Several neurobiological structures, such as the neural, inmune and endocrine systems seems to interact among themselves and to influence on clinical manifestations ...

Maria de Lurdes Pereira Rosa,

The article studies the spirituality of the late-medieval Portuguese court, first of all, as a historiographical problem, and then to propose specific readings of the historical materials. It begins with a reflection on key concepts: spirituality, religiosity, devotion; it then proceeds to analyze the «narratives of modernization» of Western history, focusing on the phenomenon of the court and its religiosity. In the second part, some characteristics of the spirituality(ies) in the Portuguese court ...

Background: Despite the prevailing notion than injury victims are healthy subjects, there is scarce evidence on their preinjury health status, particularly for motor vehicle crash (MVC) victims, where changes between their preinjury health status (or age- and sex-adjusted standards) have seldom been compared with their postinjury status. Methods: This longitudinal study recorded pre-event self-reported health status (as measured by Short Form-36 scores) of cohort participants who were followed up for ...

The concept of care risk includes any undesirable situation, or any factor contributing to its occurrence, related to the health care received and which might have negative consequences. It includes conditions like adverse effects of medicines, negligence and litigation. A safe clinical practice requires that three objectives be obtained: to identify which diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures are the safest and most efficient; to assure that they are applied to those who need them; and ...
