... patriotic duty was the pioneering psychologist B. F. Skinner.1 He was assisted by Keller and Marian Breland. Years later, during the Vietnam War, Marian ... employed their expertise to aid the war effort. Skinner, an expert in the psychology of learning, went to work on Project Pelican, developing procedures to train pigeons to guide missiles. He chose pigeons because they were such hardy birds and so adaptable to handling and training, as well as being keen-sighted. He took with him several of his graduate students, including Keller and Marian Breland, to assist with the project. The experimental ...

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the major cause of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer mortality has been reduced in Australia because of effective screening programs, but there are still about 800 new cases and 300 deaths per year. Worldwide, mortality and morbidity are high. Australia was the first country to introduce fully funded immunisation with a quadrivalent HPV vaccine for girls aged 12 and 13 in schools. A 2-year catch-up program covers all women to the age of 26 years. Age stratification ...

Chronic and persistent lung infections cause the majority of morbidity and mortality in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Galactosyl ceramide has been previously shown to be involved in Pseudomonas internalization. Therefore, we assessed ceramide levels in the plasma of patients with CF and compared them to healthy volunteers using high-performance liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry. Our results demonstrate that patients with CF display significantly lower levels of several ceramide ...

The authors assess the level of food safety performance in one accession country, Hungary, in one food sector (the fresh produce importing ...
