This article discusses standard and new disruptive strategies in the race to develop an anti-COVID-19 vaccine. We also included new bioinformatic data from our group mapping immunodominant epitopes and structural analysis of the spike protein. Another innovative approach reviewed here is the use of BCG vaccine as priming strategy and/or delivery system expressing SARS-CoV-2 antigens.

Lichen Striatus is an uncommon inflammatory skin eruption of unknown etiology. It rarely affects adults, and it is characterized by abrupt onset of coalescent papules, in a linear disposition, usually on the extremities. Histopathology shows lichenoid reaction involving follicles and glands. Occasionally, there is overlap with linear lichen planus and "blaschkitis", the main differential diagnoses. It is reported here the case of an adult woman with erythematous violaceous papules on the right side ...

The concentrations of theobromine (TB) and caffeine (CF) together with other substances such as phenolic compounds, contribute to the perception of the bitter taste characteristic of fermented and unfermented Amazonian cocoa samples and their edible derivatives, such as chocolates. Thus, an analytical method based on square wave voltammetry (SWV) with a boron doped diamond electrode (BDD) was proposed to determine them. The supporting electrolyte, pH buffer solutions and parameters of the SWV technique ...

In this study, we investigated the relationship between motor competence (MC) and behavioral and health outcomes in youth through its relationship to physical activity (PA) and body composition (in terms of body fat). To date, it is unclear whether these variables reciprocally influence each other over time. We assessed whether and how MC, PA and body composition influence each other across adolescence. In a longitudinal study with 14 months of follow-up, we recruited 166 adolescents aged 12-13 years. ...

Endometriosis is a gynecological condition affecting 10% of women in reproductive age. High rates of depression and anxiety are observed in these patients. The mechanisms underlying endometriosis-induced behavioral alterations are still elusive. Here, we sought to characterize time-related behavioral alterations in rats submitted to endometriosis model (EM) induced ...

Abstract DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also ...

The physiopathology of Chagas' disease has been largely defined in murine infections with virulent strains which partially represent parasite diversity. This report reviews our studies with Sylvio X10/4 parasites, a Trypanosoma cruzi clone that induces no acute phase but in C3H/He mice leads to chronic myocarditis resembling the human disease.

• Polysaccharide from Acanthophora spicifera (PAs) is an agar-type polysaccharide. • PAs possesses a high sulfate content. • PAs reduces the oxidative stress and enhances defense mechanisms of the gastric mucosa. In this study, a polysaccharide from marine alga Acanthophora spicifera (PAs) was isolated and structurally characterized. Its protective potential against chemically-induced gastric mucosa injury was evaluated. The gel permeation chromatography experiments and spectroscopy spectrum showed that PAs is a sulfated ...

Thus, based on the experimental food chain "Eisenia fetida → Danio rerio → Oreochromis niloticus", the current study tested the hypothesis that carbon nanofibers (CNFs) accumulated in animals are transferred to the upper trophic level and cause mutagenic and cytotoxic changes. Chagas' disease is a chronic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and represents an important public health burden in Latin America. Frequently the disease evolves undetectable for decades, while in a significant fraction of the affected individuals it culminates in death by heart failure.
