Dyslexia is a specific impairment in reading that affects 1 in 10 people. Previous studies have failed to isolate a single cause of the disorder, but several candidate genes have been reported. We measured motion perception in two groups of dyslexics, with and without a deletion within the DCDC2 gene, a risk gene for dyslexia. We found impairment for motion particularly strong at high spatial frequencies in the population carrying the deletion. The data suggest that deficits in motion processing ...

Motion perception deficits in dyslexia show a large intersubjective variability, partly reflecting genetic factors influencing brain architecture development. In previous work, we have demonstrated that dyslexic carriers of a mutation of the DCDC2 gene have a very strong impairment in motion perception. In the present study, we investigated structural white matter alterations associated with the poor motion perception in a cohort of twenty dyslexics with a subgroup carrying the DCDC2 gene deletion ( ...

The DCDC2 gene is involved in neuronal migration. Heterotopias have been found within the white matter of DCDC2-knockdown rats. A deletion in DCDC2/intron 2 (DCDC2d), which encompasses a regulatory region named 'regulatory element associated with dyslexia 1' (READ1), increases the risk for dyslexia. We hypothesized that DCDC2d can be associated to alterations of the white matter structure in general and in dyslexic brains. Based on a full-factorial analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model, we investigated ...

Deficits of visual motion have often been reported in developmental dyslexia, but the effects are often small and present only in a sub-population of subjects. We studied motion perception in a selective population of 10 dyslexic subjects with an alteration of the gene DCDC2 (crucial for neural migration during embryogenesis) and correlated the visual perceptual deficit with morphological changes of white matter tracts. All subjects showed a severe deficit in contrast thresholds for discriminating ...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes several neurological diseases in the late stages of AIDS, but their ante-mortem diagnosis is problematic.Clinical criteria (defining a presumptive diagnosis) and polymerase chain reaction $4 (PCR) assay from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were blindly used to predict the involvement of CMV in neurological disorders of 164 consecutive AIDS patients undergoing a lumbar puncture.During the follow-up, a definite diagnosis based on viral culture of CSF, clinical outcome and/or CNS ...
