In this paper, the S-theory is applied to determine crack initiation and direction for cracked T-beams and circumferentially cracked pipes. It makes use of a parameter called strain energy density factor, S, which is a function of the stress intensity factors. The strain energy density theory provides a more general treatment of fracture mechanics problems by virtue of its ability in describing the multiscale feature of material damage and in dealing with mixed mode crack propagation problem. A ...

Kupffer cells are intrasinusoidal space located macrophages with phagocytic capacity. Interferons are cytokines with antiviral, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory activities which may influence the activity of Kupffer cells. Aim of this study was to evaluate Kupffer cell gene expression after interferon-alpha or interferon-gamma stimulation in order to investigate a link between these cytokines and macrophage activation.Rat Kupffer cells were cultured for 24 h and divided into three groups: ...

Despite the meticulous attention of food industries to prevent hazards in packaged goods, some contaminants may still elude the controls. Indeed, standard methods, like X-rays, metal detectors and near-infrared imaging, cannot detect low-density materials. Microwave sensing is an alternative method that, combined with machine learning classifiers, can tackle these deficiencies. In this paper we present a design methodology applied to a case study in the food sector. Specifically, we offer a complete ...

Abstract: Oxidative stress due to free radical formation and initiation of abnormal oxidative reactions is involved in several diseases of newborns, such as hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy. Melatonin, an endogenously produced indoleamine primarily formed in the pineal gland, is a potent free radical scavenger as well as an indirect antioxidant. The present study was conducted to evaluate the formation of oxidative damage mediators and the possible effect of melatonin treatment in a model of hypoxic– ...

Single crystals of the reduced form of Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase (space group P212121, one dimer per asymmetric unit) have been obtained and their X-ray structure refined at 1.9 Å resolution. The structure shows that the imidazolate bridge is maintained in the present crystalline form. It is confirmed that in solution the bridge is broken and the involved histidine is protonated on the side of copper. Based on the NOE constraints, and with the aid of molecular dynamics calculations, a structural ...

Accelerators integrated on-die with General-Purpose CPUs (GP-CPUs) can yield significant performance and power improvements. Their extensive use, however, is ultimately limited by their area overhead; due to their high degree of specialization, the opportunity cost of investing die real estate on accelerators can become prohibitive, especially for general-purpose architectures. In this paper we present a novel technique aimed at mitigating this opportunity cost by allowing GP-CPU cores to reuse accelerator ...

The survey resulted in two maps of dose equivalent rate, related to pre-anthropic and present conditions. Presently, the average of the dose equivalent rate from outdoor gamma-ray field is equal to 0.31 μSv h-1, corresponding to an outdoor annual effective dose equivalent of 0.548 mSv a-1 and to an outdoor excess lifetime cancer risk [International ...

The debonding phenomenon between fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and masonry is influenced by the presence of mortar joints that could reduce the bond capacity of the FRP-brick interface (i.e., in the absence of the joints). The actual estimate of the maximum load transferable at the FRP-masonry interface is cumbersome. Thus, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, the paper provides a set of useful key remarks to understand how the presence of joints influence the behavior of the FRP-masonry ...

Prostate cancer cells may lose androgen-sensitivity after androgen ablation therapy, becoming highly invasive and metastatic. The biological mechanisms responsible for higher tumurogenicity of androgen-independent prostate carcinomas are not entirely known. We demonstrate that androgen receptor regulation of adhesion and invasion of prostate cancer cells through modulation of alpha6beta4 integrin expression may be one of the molecular mechanisms responsible of this phenomenon. We found that protein ...

Abstract Owing to its well‐preserved and long‐lasting archaeological record, the necropolis of Petit‐Chasseur in the Upper Rhône Valley (3100–1600 BC) showcases the economic, social, and ideological changes of 3 rd and 2 nd millennium BC Europe excellently. An in‐depth investigation of pottery artifacts was carried out using multiple spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.
