Fish assemblages recorded from August 2010 to July 2013 in two lotic and lentic environments of the Middle Paraná River floodplain were studied in the light of flood and flow pulse variations. Three flood pulses occurred during the period of study, each with a different magnitude, duration and timing. Instead four flow pulses were recorded during this period. The varied hydrological conditions had an influence on the ichthyofauna. The fish species richness in both lentic and lotic habitat was negatively ...

We analysed the effects of decadal and annual hydrologic fluctuations on freshwater fisheries catches in the Middle Paraná River for a period of six decades from the 1930s to the 1980s. The climatic fluctuations in this period strongly affected the hydrology of the Middle Paraná River and the characteristics of its flow regime. The magnitude of floods as well as maximum, minimum and mean water levels increased progressively from 1930s until the 1980s concomitantly with increasing frequency and intensity ...

Abstract This paper deals with the hydrological variability effects on the primary commercial fish species inhabiting the main channel and the floodplain of the large Paraná River in its middle reaches in Argentina. Analysing more than eight decades (1935–2016) of information on the most frequent and abundant commercial species in conjunction with hydrological levels and temperature, our results show that spring–summer floods of a certain magnitude ( c . 6 m) and durations (> 80 days) are crucial for sustaining ...

Extreme heat waves, exacerbated by the urban heat island effect, have major impacts on the lives and health of city residents. Projected future temperature increases for many urban areas of the United States will further exacerbate these impacts. Accurate predictions of the spatial and temporal distribution of risk associated with such heat waves can support the optimal implementation of strategies to mitigate these risks, such as the issuance of heat advisories and the activation of cooling centers. ...

The urban heat island effect, exacerbated by rising average surface temperatures due to climate change, can lead to adverse impacts on city populations. Fine resolution modeling of the spatial and temporal distribution of extreme heat risk within a city can improve the strategies used to mitigate this risk, such as the issuance of targeted heat advisories to city residents. In this paper, we combine a recently developed method for probabilistic modeling of urban temperatures with previously developed ...

This paper introduces a probabilistic approach to spatio-temporal high resolution meso-scale modeling of near-surface temperature and applies it to regions of dimension about 150∼200 km, with 1 km grid spacing and 30-min interval. Our probabilistic approach, based on linear Gaussian models and dimensionality reduction, can accurately forecast short-term temperature fields and serve as a computationally less expensive alternative to physics-based models that necessitate high-performance computing. ...

Fluctuations of temperature and water levels are the two main drivers of aquatic life in river floodplain ecosystems. The large Middle Paraná River floodplain exhibits marked seasons and important interannual hydrological changes. Using a three-factor-based approach (fish reproductive traits, hydroclimatic conditions, and floodplain recruitment patterns), we analyzed how fish life history evolves within this fluctuating environment. We observed that hydroclimatic conditions can be considered through ...
