Propolis extracts are currently used for the treatment of oronasal infections and as antioxidant agents. Ethanolic commercial Brazilian propolis extracts were assayed for their ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and also for their ability to scavenge DPPH radicals. These activities were correlated with their total phenolic and flavonoid levels. In one group of extracts there was a strong linear relationship between total phenol contents and the measured activities, while in the ...

Abstract Hypertension is a major and highly prevalent risk factor for various diseases. Among the most frequently prescribed antihypertensive first‐line drugs are synthetic angiotensin I‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI). However, since their use in hypertension therapy has been linked to various side effects, interest in the application of food‐derived ACEI peptides (ACEIp) as antihypertensive agents is rapidly growing. Although promising, the industrial production of ACEIp through conventional ...

Abstract Background The diseases for which Aedes aegypti is a vector are worrisome. The high vector competence of this mosquito, as well as its anthropophilia and ability to adapt to the urban environment, allows it to exploit many habitats, making its prevention an arduous task. Despite current disease control measures focused on the mosquito, the effectiveness in containing its dispersion still requires improvement; thus greater knowledge about this insect is fundamental. Methods Aedes aegypti ...

This study isolated Lactobacillus strains from caries-free subjects and evaluated the inhibitory effects directly on three strains of C. albicans, two clinical strains and one reference strain. Thirty Lactobacillus strains were isolated and evaluated for antimicrobial activity against in vitro C. albicans biofilms. L. paracasei 28.4, L. rhamnosus 5.2 and L. fermentum 20.4 isolates exhibited the most significant inhibitory activity against C. albicans. Co-incubation between these microorganisms resulted ...

The survival and spreading of resistant bacterial strains has boosted research which focusses on discovering new antimicrobial agents derived from plant species. Several studies have demonstrated that substances present in plant extracts can modify the activity of antibiotics, increasing their efficacy. Species of the genus Psidium have been popularly used to treat bacterial infections. However, their modulatory effect on antibiotic activity remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to ...

This study explores two World Heritage Sites (WHS) as tourism destinations by applying several uncommon techniques in these settings: Smart Tourism Analytics, namely Text mining, Sentiment Analysis, and Market Basket Analysis, to highlight patterns according to attraction, nationality, and repeated visits. Salamanca (Spain) and Coimbra (Portugal) are analyzed and compared based on 8,638 online travel reviews (OTR), from TripAdvisor (2017–2018). Findings show that WHS reputation does not seem to be relevant ...

This is a diagnosis of exclusion and a confounding factor in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, any other causes of chronic meningitis by opportunistic or co-infection must be ruled out. Innovative technologies as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) (550 W, 60% amplitude, 50 °C) or subcritical water extraction (SWE) (200 °C, 11.7 MPa) were more effective than hot water extractions to obtain β-glucan-enriched fractions from shiitake mushrooms. UAE required longer extraction time (60 min) than SWE (15 min). Combination of UAE + SWE or pre-treatment of the raw material with supercritical CO2 (SFE) (40 °C, 35 MPa, 3 h) before both extractions yielded extracts containing larger β-glucan concentrations. ...

Cells ensure their protein quality control through the proteostasis network. Aging and age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, have been associated to the reduction of proteostasis network efficiency and, consequently, to the accumulation of protein misfolded aggregates. The decline in protein homeostasis has been associated with the development and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, cardiac hypertrophy, cardiomyopathies, and heart failure. ...

Objective: Arterial stiffness, namely pulse wave velocity (PWV), is an emerging biomarker in the assessment of vascular health. This meta-analysis aims to determine the effects of exercise training on PWV in patients with hypertension, and to identify the possible moderator variables (e.g. type of exercise) of the effect of exercise on PWV. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane and Web of Science were searched up until July 2019 for randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of exercise interventions ...

Probiotics can release bioactive substances that can inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of pathogenic microorganisms such as Streptococcus mutans. In this context, we evaluated whether the supernatants of Lactobacillus strains isolated from caries-free subjects can inhibit S. mutans, one of the most important bacteria for dental caries. First, the supernatants of 22 Lactobacillus strains were screened for antibacterial activity against S. mutans in planktonic cultures. All 22 Lactobacillus ...

The Yellow Fever (YF) vaccination is recommended for people living in endemic areas and represents the most effective strategy to reduce the risk of infection. The presence of skeletal deformities in farmed gilthead seabream represents a major bottleneck for the industry leading to economic losses, negative impacts on the consumers’ perception of aquaculture, and animal welfare issues for the fish. Although past work has primarily focused on the hatchery phase to reduce the incidence of skeletal anomalies, this work targets the successive pre-ongrowing phase ...
