Abstract Engineered log jams (ELJs) are employed to address river restoration goals and a range of river management problems including coarse sediment movement. In the Bowmont Water, a dynamic wandering gravel‐bed river in the Scottish Borders, 33 previously untested ELJs primarily designed to capture and store coarse sediment, were installed on a trial basis. Using repeated topographical surveys and field observations, the performance of the ELJs in response to a 5–10 year recurrence interval flood ...

ABSTRACT The ground water denitrification capacity of riparian zones in deep soils, where substantial ground water can flow through low‐gradient stratified sediments, may affect watershed nitrogen export. We hypothesized that the vertical pattern of ground water denitrification in riparian hydric soils varies with geomorphic setting and follows expected subsurface carbon distribution (i.e., abrupt decline with depth in glacial outwash vs. negligible decline with depth in alluvium). We measured in ...

Abstract The influence of naturally occurring in‐channel large wood (LW) on the hydraulics, hydrology and geomorphology of rivers is well documented. To inform management and better understand naturally occurring or artificially placed LW, hydraulic and hydrological models are applied to predict the possible benefits and drawbacks for habitat, sediment management and flood risk mitigation. However, knowledge and guidance on appropriate representation in models, needed to underpin realistic predictions, ...

Floodplain reconnection can potentially improve the hydrogeomorphology of river corridors and attenuate flood peaks. However, empirical evidence of its effectiveness – needed to inform future restoration – is limited. A 70 m long flood embankment was lowered on the upper River Dee, a medium sized gravel bed river in north-east Scotland to reconnect a backwater and floodplain. Comparison of two years pre- and three years of post-restoration hydro-geomorphic monitoring, shows the lowering and subsequent ...

Lymphatic injury leading to leakage of chyle is a potential complication that may arise from trauma or surgery in the chest, abdomen, or neck. Although the incidence of chyle leak post surgery is low (1%‐4%), this complication can present significant challenges. Multiple approaches to the treatment of chyle leak have emerged, including nutrition, surgical, and pharmacological therapies. Although there are strong feelings among clinicians about the use of bowel rest, parenteral nutrition, or a low‐ ...

Subjects were female undergraduate students (classified as bulimic, subclinical bulimic, or normal) and their parents. Basis sets have been developed for carrying out G2 calculations on bromine- and iodine-containing molecules using all-electron (AE) calculations and quasirelativistic energy-adjusted spin–orbit-averaged seven-valence–electron effective core potentials (ECPs). Abstract Wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) is a major source of nutrients for populations across the globe, but the amino acid composition of wheat grain does not provide optimal nutrition. The nutritional value of wheat grain is limited by low concentrations of lysine (the most limiting essential amino acid) and high concentrations of free asparagine (precursor to the processing contaminant acrylamide). There are currently few available solutions for asparagine reduction and lysine biofortification through ...

We have established a lymphoma cell line from a patient with B cell lymphoma. The cell line has a complex karyotype with translocations involving bands 8q24, 14q32, and 18q21. Abstract Advanced control measures are needed after nitrogen (N) leaves agricultural fields and begins to flow through a catchment. Bioreactors – simple, wood‐chip filled trenches – and constructed wetlands afford additional treatment to reduce N from agricultural lands, but their success requires informed adoption and placement. Rates of N removal in field studies of bioreactors vary based on carbon substrate, hydrologic setting, temperature, N loading and hydraulic residence time. From limited measures ...

This paper examines research in the glaciated Northeast to relate variability in ground water nitrate removal to site attributes depicted in readily available spatial databases, such as SSUIRGO. Linking site‐specific studies of riparian ground water nitrate removal to spatial data can help target high‐value riparian locations for restoration or protection and improve ...

The glutamatergic system is thought to contribute to the motor disturbances observed in Parkinson's disease. Blockade of glutamatergic activity by a selective antagonist of the NR2B subunit of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is associated with improvement in motor symptoms in a preclinical model of Parkinson's disease. A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, 3-period crossover study was conducted in patients with moderate Parkinson's disease to evaluate the pharmacologic ...

Recent studies have demonstrated a strong link between neurodegeneration and chronic inflammation. The central nervous system (CNS) has very limited regenerative capacity. Neural cell death occurs by apoptosis and necrosis. Necrosis in the CNS usually follows ischemic or traumatic brain injury. Apoptosis is known as programmed cell death and often demonstrates histologic features of acute and chronic neurologic diseases. The innate immune response is protective to the CNS to defend against pathogens. ...
