Cathryn Donohue, Mark Donohue,
Possessors have often been treated as the ‘subjects’ of the DPs in which they appear, being analyzed as surfacing in [spec, DP] by analogy to the standard analysis for clausal subjects in a configurational framework of grammar. In this paper , we present a new descriptive generalization showing that there is in fact much variation in the coding of genitive phrases, and that the simple equation of subjects to possessors fails to capture the range of variation attested cross-linguistically. Examining ...

This study describes the distribution of an α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) acetyltransferase (MAT) in rat brain and pituitary gland. Highest activities of MAT were found in the neurointermediate lobe of the pituitary gland with the anterior lobe containing slightly less. Within the brain, lowest MAT activities were measured in the hypothalamus, the region which contained the highest concentrations of α-MSH. Relatively high enzyme activities of MAT were measured in the hippocampus, cortex ...

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury is controversial as both beneficial and harmful effects have been reported. We explored the potential role of a pharmacological agent recently shown to generate NO metabolically in the liver in an animal model of transplantation. The effect of a selective hepatic NO donor, O2-vinyl 1-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate (V-PYRRO/NO), on hepatic hemodynamics and biliary function was evaluated in both the in situ and I/R pig liver. ...

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is posttranslationally processed in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary to both N-terminally acetylated and nonacetylated forms of αMSH and β-endorphin (βEND). N-Acetylation substantially modifies the physiological responses produced by both peptides, suggesting that the activity of the peptide acetyltransferase, which posttranslationally acetylates βEND and des-acetyl-αMSH, may play an important role in defining the biological activity of the secretory products of the ...

We summarize previous estimates of volume transport and property distributions through the Mozambique Channel and offer additional estimates and measurements based on recently acquired hydrographic and float data. Previously published property distributions are consistent with southward spreading through the Channel. Waters of the Mozambique Channel are characterized by shallow and intermediate oxygen minima separated by a relative maximum. Based on hydrographic sections, the intermediate maximum ...

ABSTRACT In the facultatively phototrophic proteobacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides , formation of the photosynthetic apparatus is oxygen dependent. When oxygen tension decreases, the response regulator PrrA of the global two-component PrrBA system is believed to directly activate transcription of the puf , puh , and puc operons, encoding structural proteins of the photosynthetic complexes, and to indirectly upregulate the photopigment biosynthesis genes bch and crt . Decreased oxygen also results in inactivation ...

Understanding the effects of land use on riparian systems is dependent upon the development of methodologies to recognize changes in sedimentation related to shifts in land use. Land use trends in southern New England consist of shifts from forested precolonial conditions, to colonial and agrarian land uses, and toward modern industrial-urban landscapes. The goals of this study were to develop a set of stratigraphic indices that reflect these land use periods and to illustrate their applications. ...

While we may not be able to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the near future, several drugs presently in trials have shown promise as possible modifiers of disease progression. However, we may not be able to demonstrate efficacy due to issues of recruitment, retention, site-to-site variability, and other methodological issues. It is thus incumbent on the scientific community to find solutions to these problems, particularly as the field moves toward preventing illness or treating the disease ...

DNA methylation may mediate effects of air pollution on cardiovascular disease. The association between long-term air pollution exposure and DNA methylation in monocytes, which are central to atherosclerosis, has not been studied. We investigated the association between long-term ambient air pollution exposure and DNA methylation (candidate sites and global) in monocytes of adults (aged ≥55). One-year average ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and oxides of nitrogen (NOX) concentrations were predicted ...
