Mark Irwin,

The penetration of dyes into the vacuoles of living cells of Nitella and Valonia proceeds as though the cell consisted of a non-aqueous layer lying between the external aqueous dye solution and the internal aqueous sap of the vacuole. On this basis it should be possible to predict the relative rate of penetration of dyes into the vacuoles of living cells if we know their rate of diffusion into the “vacuole” of an artificial system representing the 3 phases just mentioned. To test this an artificial ...

Abstract: Low copy number (LCN) STR typing was successfully applied to four interesting cases during developmental validation of the approach for degraded skeletal remains. Specific questions were addressed in each case, with the acquisition of STR data largely serving as additional confirmatory or investigatory information in any specific situation, and not necessarily providing the definitive evidence to establish identity. The cases involve missing U.S. service members from World War I, World ...

Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, Jay A. Irwin, Mark LaGory, Ferris J. Ritchey,

Suicide ideation is a sensitive indicator of personal well-being. While ideation occurs in roughly 3 percent of the US population annually, in this study rates are 10 times higher. This article explores the role of social capital in mediating negative life circumstances on ideation for a sample of 161 homeless adults in a mid-sized Southern US metropolitan area. Our results imply that social capital does not function the same way for homeless persons as it does for the general population. This finding ...

The South-West Cloud lies at a projected distance of ∼100 kpc from the centre of M31 and extends for at least ∼50 kpc in projection. We use Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey photometry of red giant branch stars to determine a distance to the South-West Cloud of |$793^{+45}_{-45}$| kpc. The metallicity of the cloud is found to be [Fe/H] = −1.3 ± 0.1. This is consistent ...

A light-hearted introduction to philosophy through the antics of the Simpsons, television's animated family. These essays on the silly, absurd, hyper-ironic and strangely philosophical world that is Springfield - the town without a state - explore philosophy and the major philosophers of Western thought: is Bart a pragmatist? Why is Mr Burn's quest for happiness continually frustrated? The contributors discuss the thought of key philosophers including Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, Heidegger and Kant, ...

The term 'metabolically healthy obese (MHO)' is distinguished using body mass index (BMI), yet BMI is a poor index of adiposity. Some epidemiological data suggest that MHO carries a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or mortality than being normal weight yet metabolically unhealthy. We aimed to undertake a detailed phenotyping of individuals with MHO by using imaging techniques to examine ectopic fat (visceral and liver fat deposition) and myocardial function. We hypothesised that metabolically ...

Ann Hochschild, Nina Irwin, Mark Ptashne,

It has been suggested that the λ repressor stimulates transcription of its own gene by binding to the λ operator and contacting RNA polymerase bound to the adjacent promoter. We describe three different mutants (called pc) of the λ phage repressor that are specifically deficient in the positive control function. We show that the amino acid residues altered in the pc mutants lie on the surface of the DNA-bound repressor that we predict, based on structural and other evidence, would most closely approach ...

Nina Irwin, Mark Ptashne,

In the presence of cyclic AMP, the catabolite activator protein (CAP) of Escherichia coli binds DNA and stimulates transcription at a number of promoters. We have examined a model of CAP bound at the gal promoter and, using directed mutagenesis, have isolated CAP mutants that are analogous to the lambda repressor positive control (pc) mutants. These CAP mutants bind DNA but are defective in stimulating transcription at the gal P1 promoter. These mutants are also altered in positive control at the ...
