Adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) has been shown to nearly halve the risk of biochemical failure (BF) for high risk post prostatectomy patients. The RAVES trial aimed to test the hypothesis that observation with early salvage radiotherapy (SRT) is not inferior to ART with respect to biochemical failure in patients with high risk disease after radical prostatectomy (RP). Background Adjuvant radiotherapy has been shown to halve the risk of biochemical progression for patients with high-risk disease after radical prostatectomy. Early salvage radiotherapy could result in similar biochemical control with lower treatment toxicity. We aimed to compare biochemical progression between patients given adjuvant radiotherapy and those given salvage radiotherapy. Methods We did a phase 3, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial across 32 oncology centres in Australia and ...

Eucalyptus trees have been important components of the California urban landscape for almost 150 years. Until 1984, they were free of both insect and disease pests. In the last 16 years, however, a series of herbivorous insect species have been introduced into the state, probably accidentally, causing significant damage to the trees. Research programs have provided solutions to some of these pest problems, but more pests are continually introduced, recently the red gum lerp psyllid, the lemon gum ...

Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and autonomic dysregulation are common health concerns in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Two therapies that may help improve cardiovascular control are body-weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) and head-up tilt training (HUTT). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of short-term BWSTT and HUTT on cardiac autonomic function. Seven participants (6 male, 37.1+/-7.7 years) with SCI (C5-T10, ASIA A-C; 5.0+/-4.4 years post-injury) ...

Sprint interval training involves short bouts of high-intensity exercise and has produced training responses similar to those of endurance training. The effects of multiple supramaximal exercise bouts on neurocardiac modulation have not been examined. Therefore, we investigated the recovery of heart rate (HR) variability and nonlinear HR dynamics in 10 young (20.1 ± 1.2 years) healthy males following single (1) and multiple (4) Wingate tests. HR variability was assessed with time and frequency domain ...

ObjectivesAlthough long-term use of azithromycin has shown a significant clinical improvement for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), its long-term effect on the susceptibility of commensal flora within CF airways has not yet been examined. We therefore suggest that long-term use of azithromycin increases macrolide resistance in commensal streptococci.

We have been investigating the adjuvant properties of two super-activated interferon-regulatory factors (IRFs), IRF-3(5D) and IRF7/3A, identified in our previous studies of structure–function relationships, for enhancing plasmid vaccines. Intramuscular injection of plasmid cocktails encoding IRF-3(5D) and IRF7/3A molecules elicited cytotoxic T cell responses in over 80% of mice following a single immunization compared to a 20% response-rate using a control cocktail. Most interestingly, greater than ...

Abstract In vivo electroporation dramatically enhances plasmid vaccine efficacy. This enhancement can be attributed to increased plasmid delivery and, possibly, to some undefined adjuvant properties. Previous reports have demonstrated CD8+ T cell priming by plasmid vaccines is strongly dependent upon CD4+ T cell help. Indeed, the efficacy of a plasmid vaccine expressing Escherichia coli β-galactosidase was severely attenuated in MHC class II-deficient (C2D) mice. To determine whether electroporation ...
