SummaryA randomized study was performed on 24 patients with ankylosing spondylitis to compare the efficacy and tolerability of 20 mg tenoxicam daily with 50 mg diclofenac twice daily. There were 6 withdrawals from the group taking tenoxicam and 4 from the diclofenac group. Depression in 1 patient taking tenoxicam was the only significant adverse event. Both drugs were otherwise well tolerated. Tenoxicam and diclofenac were rated as good or excellent by 27% and 5.5% of patients, respectively. Global ...

Abstract Natural resource management decisions are often made in the face of uncertainty. The question for the decision maker is whether the uncertainty is an impediment to the decision and, if so, whether it is worth reducing uncertainty before or while implementing actions. Value of information (VoI) methods are decision analytical tools to evaluate the benefit to the decision maker of resolving uncertainty. These methods, however, require quantitative predictions of the outcomes as a function ...

Pyocyanin (N-methyl-1-hydroxyphenazine), a redox-active virulence factor produced by the human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is known to compromise mucociliary clearance. Exposure of human bronchial epithelial cells to pyocyanin increased the rate of cellular release of H2O2 threefold above the endogenous H2O2 production. Real-time measurements of the redox potential of the cytosolic compartment using the redox sensor roGFP1 showed that pyocyanin (100 μM) oxidized the cytosol from a resting value ...

Endosialidases (endoNs), as identified so far, are tailspike proteins of bacteriophages that specifically bind and degrade the alpha2,8-linked polysialic acid (polySia) capsules of their hosts. The crystal structure solved for the catalytic domain of endoN from coliphage K1F (endoNF) revealed a functional trimer. Folding of the catalytic trimer is mediated by an intramolecular C-terminal chaperone domain. Release of the chaperone from the folded protein confers kinetic stability to endoNF. In mutant ...

Reported here is a preliminary study of the applicability of Schwarzer's (1992) health action process approach (HAPA) to low‐risk, single‐occasion drinking (LRSOD). The hypothesis tested is that a decision to act coupled with cognitive activities in the planning and preparation stages will predict health behavior change. Participants were 128 female undergraduate students. Analysis showed that the HAPA constructs coupled with past drinking frequency accounted for 29% of the variance in drinking behavior ...

Transcriptional latency of HIV is a last barrier to viral eradication. Chromatin-remodeling complexes and post-translational histone modifications likely play key roles in HIV-1 reactivation, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. We performed an RNAi-based screen of human lysine methyltransferases and identified the SET and MYND domain-containing protein 2 (SMYD2) as an enzyme that regulates HIV-1 latency. Knockdown of SMYD2 or its pharmacological inhibition reactivated latent ...

The shape-persistent {Pd2 L4 } cage contains two axial cationic centers and an array of four equatorial H-bond donors pointing directly towards the center of the cavity. Pseudomonas aeruginosa secrete N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-homoserine lactone (HSL-C12) as a quorum-sensing molecule to regulate bacterial gene expression. Because HSL-C12 is membrane permeant, multiple cell types in P. aeruginosa-infected airways may be exposed to HSL-C12, especially adjacent to biofilms where local (HSL-C12) may be high. Previous reports showed that HSL-C12 causes both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects. To characterize HSL-C12's pro- and anti-inflammatory effects in host cells, we measured ...

ABSTRACT Understanding nest site preferences for a species is a necessary component of conservation efforts because it allows managers to protect and create habitat that will promote population growth. We surveyed 305 sites with or near colonially nesting waterbirds for nesting reddish egrets ( Egretta rufescens ) during 2016 in Florida, USA, to identify factors that influenced the probability of occurrence and the abundance of nesting reddish egrets. Fifty‐eight of 150 (39%) sites with nesting waterbirds ...

Abstract DLBCL are aggressive, rapidly proliferating tumors that critically depend on the ATF4-mediated integrated stress response (ISR) to adapt to stress caused by uncontrolled growth, such as hypoxia, amino acid deprivation, and accumulation of misfolded proteins. Here, we show that ISR hyperactivation is a targetable liability in DLBCL. We describe a novel class of compounds represented by BTM-3528 and BTM-3566, which activate the ISR through the mitochondrial protease OMA1. Treatment of tumor ...
