Abstract The saliva is important to maintain the integrity of tissues and teeth, besides having microbial activity. Hemodialysis ( HD ) patients usually have reduced salivary flow rate ( SFR ) and are exposed to all its associated complications. The aim of the present study was to identify HD ‐related factors associated with reduced SFR . A cross‐sectional study was performed with maintenance HD patients. Stimulated whole saliva was collected before and after HD . Xerostomia was assessed through the validated ...

The oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the eighth more common cancer in men. The development of new and more efficient drugs is needed. Plants of the genus Piper are popularly used in the treatment of many diseases. This study evaluated the antitumor effect of extract, fraction and isolated compounds from leaves of P. rivinoides in oral cancer. The isolated compounds (conocarpan, eupomatenoid-5 and eupomatenoid-6) were effective in inducing cell death in OSCC cell lines (SCC4, SCC9 and SCC25) compared ...

Seed ethanolic extracts of 21 Brazilian plants were evaluated for ovicidal, larvicidal, and pupicidal activities against insecticide-susceptible (SS) and field-collected (FC) strains of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), as well as for their effects on nontarget organisms. Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. Allemao extract was highly toxic to both mosquito strains. Schinopsis brasiliensis Engler extract showed low toxicity and was 38–68 times less toxic to Ae. aegypti larvae than was M. urundeuva extract. ...

A simple enantioselective method for the determination of praziquantel (PZQ) and trans-4-hydroxypraziquantel (4-OHPZQ) in human plasma was developed and validated by high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The plasma samples were prepared by liquid–liquid extraction using a mixture of methyl-tert-butylether/dichloromethane (2:1, v/v) as extraction solvent. The direct resolution of PZQ and 4-OHPZQ enantiomers was performed on a Chiralpak AD column using hexane–isopropanol (75:25, v/ ...

Transcranial color-coded Doppler (TCCD) is an ultrasonographic technique used to obtain and evaluate images of the cerebral parenchyma and to assess blood flow velocities of the intracranial vessels. One of the major limitations of TCCD is the failure to insonate through the transtemporal window, which occurs in about 5%-44% of patients. Temporal bone thickness has been strongly associated with transtemporal window failure (TWF). The aims of the study were to evaluate the association between TWF on ...

Abstract Background Blomia tropicalis is a dust mite and an important source of allergens in tropical regions. Up to now, the assays to diagnose atopy to this mite use whole body extract as antigens. However, anti- B. tropicalis IgE antibodies cross-react with Ascaris lumbricoides antigens, hindering the diagnosis of allergy to this mite. In this study, B. tropicalis recombinant allergens were evaluated with the purpose of developing an immunodiagnostic assay for allergy to this mite with greater ...

Summary Background: Lichen sclerosus (LS) has been identified with increased frequency in families, often associated with HLA markers, mainly DQ7. A genetic co‐etiology seems likely in this setting. Moreover, there is an association of LS with autoimmune disorders, such as the presence of anti‐thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies (anti‐TPO), a hallmark of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Patients and Methods: In 3 families affected by LS, we verified their HLA markers, and identified previously undiagnosed ...

Well studied in patients with ischemic stroke after reperfusion therapies (RT), hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is also common in patients not treated with RT and can lead to disability even in initially asymptomatic cases. The best predictors of HT in patients not treated with RT are not well established. Therefore, we aimed to identify predictors of HT in patients not submitted to RT and create a user-friendly predictive score (PROpHET).Patients admitted to a Comprehensive Stroke Center from 2015 ...

The leaves of Eugenia biflora (Myrtaceae) are traditionally used by Amazonian populations for the control of diabetes. However, their chemical composition has not yet been described and pharmacological evidence has not been reported. This study aimed to identify the chemical constituents and evaluate the hypoglycemic and toxic effect of the dry extract of the E. biflora leaves (DEEB).DEEB, obtained by infusion, was analyzed using LC-HRMS and NMR, whose the catechin flavonoid was quantified using NMR. ...

The use of cashew apple bagasse hemicellulose hydrolysate (CABH) to produce lactic acid by two strains of lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus plantarum FJ05311 and L. plantarum FJ05315, was evaluated. The application of cashew apple bagasse (CAB) would enhance the establishment of a biorefinery from this agro-industrial residue since its main compounds, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, can be used to obtain several bioproducts. The influence of essential parameters was studied for the production ...

There is an urgent need for new inhibitors against T. cruzi, a protozoal infection that affects about 8 million people annually around the world. In this study, we describe the synthesis, characterization, and the inhibitory effects of the chalcone (E)-1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)prop‑2-en-1-one (BNZTHP) against T. cruzi Y strain forms. The molecular structure of this compound was characterized by spectroscopic techniques, and its potential against T. cruzi was evaluated by in vitro ...

Dengue represents a serious social and economic public health problem; then trying to contribute to improve its control, the objective of this research was to develop phytoterapics for dengue treatment using natural resources from Caatinga biome. Galactomannans isolated from Adenanthera pavonina L., Caesalpinia ferrea Mart., and Dimorphandra gardneriana Tull were chemically sulfated in order to evaluate the antioxidant, and antiviral activities and the role in the inhibition of virus DENV-2 in Vero ...

A series of noncommercial polyols which do not contain β-hydrogen were used to synthesize new oleic acid based esters as potential thermally stable biolubricants. Commercial trimethylolpropane (TMP) was used to synthesize TMP trioleate as a reference polyol ester. The esters were purified by column chromatography and their structures were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR and HRMS. The evaluated properties were kinematic viscosity, thermo-oxidative stability (by TGA) and melting point (m.p., by DSC). All ...

Background The RESILIENT trial demonstrated the clinical benefit of mechanical thrombectomy in patients presenting acute ischemic stroke secondary to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion in Brazil. Aims This economic evaluation aims to assess the cost-utility of mechanical thrombectomy in the RESILIENT trial from a public healthcare perspective. Methods A cost-utility analysis was applied to compare mechanical thrombectomy plus standard medical care (n = 78) vs. standard medical care alone (n = ...
