We study the effect of two-photon absorption and Kerr nonlinearity on the optical properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal made with amorphous silicon and SiO2. A stop band appearing near 1.5 μm is monitored with a weak probe beam and modulated by changes in the refractive index caused by a pump pulse at 1.71 μm with 18 GW/cm2 peak intensity. Nonlinear optical characterization of the sample using Z-scan points out to two-photon absorption as the main contributor to free carrier excitation ...

Despite three decades of political efforts and a wealth of research on the causes and catastrophic impacts of climate change, global carbon dioxide emissions have continued to rise and are 60% higher today than they were in 1990. Exploring this rise through nine thematic lenses—covering issues of climate governance, the fossil fuel industry, geopolitics, economics, mitigation modeling, energy systems, inequity, lifestyles, and social imaginaries—draws out multifaceted reasons for our collective ...

Throughout the world, several efforts currently exist for restocking clawed lobster (Homarus sp.) by releasing mass amounts of postlarvae in the wild. Therefore, optimization of hatchery techniques and evaluation of their influence on lobster postlarvae behavior at release time are of interest. This study looked at the effects of light regime (photoperiod and light intensity) on growth, survival, and behavior of American lobster postlarvae (stage IV) at release time. Results showed that photophase ...

Abstract Aim To assess the feasibility, acceptability and potential impact of a cognitive behavioural group intervention occurring over 12 sessions and focusing on romantic relationships for single men with early psychosis. Methods Recruitment, drop‐out and participation rates were collected. An A‐B‐A within‐subject design (n = 7), where each participant acted as his own control, was used to determine potential impact (on social functioning, romantic relationship functioning, self‐esteem, theory of ...

The use of a fast temperature jump (T-jump) is a very powerful experiment aiming at studying protein denaturation dynamics. However, probing the secondary structure is a difficult challenge and rarely yields quantitative values. We present the technical implementation of far-UV circular dichroism in a nanosecond T-jump experiment and show that this experiment allows us to follow quantitatively the change in the helical fraction of a poly(glutamic acid) peptide during its thermal denaturation with ...

Abstract Sustained periods of anoxia, driven by eutrophication, threaten coastal marine systems and can lead to mass mortalities of even resilient animals such as bivalves. While mortality rates under anoxia are well‐studied, the specific mechanism(s) of mortality are less clear. We used a suite of complementary techniques (LT50, histology, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and valvometry) to show that the proliferation of anaerobic bacteria within eastern oysters ( Crassostrea virginica ) accelerates mortality ...

Activins and inhibins are polypeptides of the transforming growth factor-β family that participate in differentiation and growth of diverse cell types, and are involved in endocrine/paracrine regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Mice with α-inhibin subunit gene deletion develop large testicular tumors. In these animals, a 200-fold increase in testicular expression of activin βA subunit mRNA was detected using S1-nuclease protection analysis. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that ...

The current climate crisis is associated with rising sea levels, which raises the concerning prospect of losing coastal ecosystems, such as salt marshes. Where inland migration is impossible, salt marshes will only persist if their vertical accretion exceeds the rate of sea-level rise. Positive vertical accretion is mainly driven by sedimentation, whereas negative vertical accretion is driven by erosion and soil compaction, among others. These processes can be influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. ...

Numerous efforts have been invested in designing and configuring residual forest stands in Canadian boreal forest to preserve their overall biodiversity. Now that several landscapes have been partially logged, the next issue in forest management involves the planning of residual forest stand harvesting without compromising wildlife populations. The subcellular distribution of the two isozymes of 5α-reductase has been controversial. To resolve this issue which could provide clues about the respective functions of the two isozymes, two antisera were generated, one which was specific for the Type 1 5α-reductase and one which recognized both isozymes. In COS cells transfected separately with the Type 1 or Type 2 cDNA, both isozymes were detected on Western blots at an Mr of 26 000. Subfractionation of the COS cells resulted in the partitioning ...

Background and Purpose— Many ischemic strokes or transient ischemic attacks are labeled cryptogenic but may have undetected atrial fibrillation (AF). We sought to identify those most likely to have subclinical AF. Methods— We prospectively studied patients with cryptogenic stroke or transient ischemic attack aged ≥55 years in sinus rhythm, without known AF, enrolled in the intervention arm of the 30 Day Event Monitoring Belt for Recording Atrial Fibrillation After a Cerebral Ischemic Event (EMBRACE) ...

Green water is a technique commonly used in aquaculture, that consists of adding live algae in the water culture and its benefits have been shown for several species. Several hypotheses exist to explain the benefits of green water: increase in nutritional value; action as a probiotic; increase in contrast to reveal preys for larvae; or increase in predator behaviour of larvae. Green water produced with a mix of strains Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros muelleri (50:50, cells:cells) applied in four ...

Studies examining proprioceptive and visual contributions to rapid corrections for externally applied mechanical and spatial perturbations during reaching have provided evidence for flexible processing of sensory feedback that accounts for musculoskeletal system dynamics. Notably, however, such perturbations commonly arise from our body’s own motion. In line with this, we provide compelling evidence that, similar to proprioceptive and visual signals, vestibular signals are processed for online reach ...
