We have previously described the safety and immunomodulatory effects of Lactobacillus paracasei CNCM I-4034, Bifidobacterium breve CNCM I-4035 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036 in healthy volunteers. The scope of this work was to evaluate the effects of these probiotic strains on the hepatic steatosis of obese rats. We used the Zucker rat as a genetic model of obesity. Zucker-Leprfa/fa rats received one of three probiotic strains, a mixture of L. paracasei CNCM I-4034 and B. breve CNCM I-4035, ...

The aim of this study was to examine the major differences in the fecal microbiota of breast-fed (BF) and formula-fed (FF) infants and to describe the principal bacterial components that would explain the variability in the predominant bacterial families and genus clusters.Fecal samples from 58 infants, 31 of whom were exclusively BF and 27 of whom were exclusively FF with a standard formula in agreement ...

Introduction. Abdominal wall closure management has become an important challenge during recipient candidate selection, at the time of donor to recipient matching and during the planning of the surgical procedure for intestinal or multiorgan transplantation. Different strategies have been proposed to overcome the lack of abdominal domain: to reduce the graft size or to increase the abdominal domain. Based on the recent concept of using an acellular dermis matrix (Alloderm) and the availability of ...

Contact between an elastic manifold and a rigid substrate with a self-affine fractal surface is reinvestigated with Green's function molecular dynamics. The Fourier transforms of the stress and contact autocorrelation functions (ACFs) are found to decrease as |q| -µ where q is the wavevector.Upper and lower bounds on the ratio of the two correlation functions are used to argue that they have the same scaling exponent µ.Analysis of numerical results gives µ = 1 + H, where H is the Hurst roughness exponent. ...

It is commonly assumed that knowing the height auto-correlation function of two solids in contact along with their materials properties is sufficient to predict the contact pressure distribution P(p). We investigate this assumption with contact mechanics calculations that are based on quickly converging Green's function molecular dynamics. In our simulations, elastically deformable solids are pressed against a rigid substrate. Their profile is either given by experimental data or produced with random ...

This paper is concerned with the principles of Green's function-based molecular dynamics (GFMD) simulations of semi-infinite elastic solids and their application to various contact mechanical problems. A methodology to compute the (renormalized) elastic interactions of surface atoms is presented first. It is based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, with the help of which thermal fluctuations of atomic displacements can be related to the elastic Green's functions and thus to the effective coupling ...

Our atomistic computer simulations mainly based on classical force fields suggest that the pressure-induced transition from $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ quartz to quartz II at $21\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ is irreversible. While quartz II is ferroelastic in principle, the transition itself is coelastic, as the shape of the newly formed crystal is determined by the handedness of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-quartz. Upon releasing the pressure, our model quartz II remains stable down to $5\phantom{\rule{ ...

The migration patterns of marine fishes are poorly known, in part owing to the technical limitations associated with tracking the movements of animals in deep water. Here we document a large-scale, directed, migration of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off eastern Canada. Our approach was based on the acoustic tagging of 126 fish and the deployment of 69 subsurface receivers, stretching over a 160-km distance along the edge of the Laurentian Channel. After 1 year of automated recording, we found that ...

Abstract Purpose: Novel natural killer (NK) cell–directed strategies in cancer immunotherapy aim at specifically modulating the balance between NK cell receptor signals toward tumor-specific activation. The signaling lymphocyte activation molecule–related receptor 2B4 (CD244) is an important regulator of NK cell activation. We investigated whether 2B4-enhanced activation signals can redirect the cytolytic function of human NK cells to NK cell–resistant and autologous leukemia and tumor targets. Experimental ...
