We have genetically engineered a panel of recombinant measles viruses (rMVs) that express from various positions within the MV genome either the HN or F surface glycoproteins of mumps virus (MuV) or the env, gag or pol proteins from simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). All rMVs were rescued from the respective antigenomic plasmid constructs; progeny viruses replicated comparably to the progenitor Edmonston B MV, but showed slight propagation retardation, which was dependent on the size and nature of ...

To investigate the claim that equine erythrocytes released from the spleen are older cells than those found at rest in the circulation, the 2,3, diphosphoglycerate (2,3 dpg), adenosine triphosphate (atp) and creatine concentration of erythrocytes before and following splenic emptying were examined. Normal values for thoroughbreds (43) and ponies (10) at rest were established. Following either exercise or intravenous injection of adrenaline in six thoroughbreds, there was an increase in erythrocyte creatine ...

In a seasonal world, organisms are continuously adjusting physiological processes relative to local environmental conditions. Owing to their limited heat and fat storage capacities, small animals, such as songbirds, must rapidly modulate their metabolism in response to weather extremes and changing seasons to ensure survival. As a consequence of previous technical limitations, most of our existing knowledge about how animals respond to changing environmental conditions comes from laboratory studies ...

The number of older people is set to increase dramatically worldwide. Demographic changes are likely to result in the rise of age-related chronic diseases which largely contribute to years lived with a disability and future dependence. However dependence is much less studied although intrinsically linked to disability. We investigated the prevalence and correlates of dependence among older people from middle income countries. A one-phase cross-sectional survey was carried out at 11 sites in seven ...

BackgroundDisability in elderly people in countries with low and middle incomes is little studied; according to Global Burden of Disease estimates, visual impairment is the leading contributor to years lived with disability in this population. We aimed to assess the contribution of physical, mental, and cognitive chronic diseases to disability, and the extent to which sociodemographic and health characteristics account for geographical variation in disability.MethodsWe undertook cross-sectional ...

Chronic kidney disease is associated with an increase in cardiovascular risk and mortality, and a decrease in the health-related quality of life. It is known that the physical capacity of patients with chronic kidney disease is lower than their healthy counterparts. It also decreases progressively after the start of hemodialysis, even leading to the loss of functional independence. There is a positive association between exercise and improvement of many targets in chronic kidney disease, especially ...

Infectious wildlife diseases that circulate at the interface with domestic animals pose significant threats worldwide and require early detection and warning. Although animal tracking technologies are used to discern behavioural changes, they are rarely used to monitor wildlife diseases. Common disease-induced behavioural changes include reduced activity and lethargy (‘sickness behaviour’). Here, we investigated whether accelerometer sensors could detect the onset of African swine fever (ASF), a viral ...

Despite recent advances in the knowledge of submarine canyons ecosystems, our understanding of the faunal patterns and processes in these environments is still marginal. In this study, meiobenthic nematode communities (from 300 m to 1600 m depth) obtained in November 2003 and May 2004 at eight stations inside and outside Blanes submarine canyon were analysed for nematode standing stocks (SSs), feeding types and gender-life stage distributions. Environmental data were obtained by sediment traps and ...

Background Theoretical models predict that a cost is necessary to guarantee honesty in begging displays given by offspring to solicit food from their parents. There is evidence for begging costs in the form of a reduced growth rate and immunocompetence. Moreover, begging implies vigorous physical activity and attentiveness, which should increase metabolism and thus the releasing of pro-oxidant substances. Consequently, we predict that soliciting offspring incur a cost in terms of oxidative stress, ...

The contention of this paper is that the current ethical debate over embryonic stem cell research is polarised to an extent that is not warranted by the underlying ethical conflict. It is argued that the ethical debate can be rendered more nuanced, and less polarised, by introducing non-binary notions of moral rightness and wrongness. According to the view proposed, embryonic stem cell research—and possibly other controversial activities too—can be considered 'a little bit right and a little bit wrong'. ...

Background A rare and benign cause of isolated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) increase is due to the presence of macro aspartate aminotransferase (macro‐AST). Macro‐AST is not usually considered by clinicians, leading to a large number of unnecessary and even invasive tests before diagnosed. Most commonly used laboratory methods for detection of macro‐enzymes are precipitation with polyethylene glycol (PEG), ultracentrifugation and gel filtration chromatography (GFC). Methods We report a case of an ...

Glycine N-Methyltransferase (GNMT) is a metabolic enzyme that integrates metabolism and epigenetic regulation. The product of GNMT, sarcosine, has been proposed as a prostate cancer biomarker. This enzyme is predominantly expressed in the liver, brain, pancreas, and prostate tissue, where it exhibits distinct regulation. Whereas genetic alterations in GNMT have been associated to prostate cancer risk, its causal contribution to the development of this disease is limited to cell line-based studies ...

Abstract Exposure to trauma increases the risk of engaging in detrimental health behaviours such as tobacco and substance use. In response, the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration developed Trauma‐Informed Care (TIC), an organisational framework for improving the provision of behavioural health care to account for the role exposure to trauma plays in patients' lives. We adapt TIC to introduce a novel theory of behaviour change, the Trauma‐Informed Theory of Individual ...

In this study we analyse how three cities in the arid Americas have addressed urban growth while facing water scarcity: Hermosillo, Mexico; Mendoza, Argentina; and Tucson, USA. We use the urban water security framework to examine five domains of water management: sociodemographic, economic, technological, ecological and governance (SETEG). Our analysis indicates that, in spite of water scarcity, urban growth has been promoted in the three cities. We argue that this expansion, although encouraged ...

The effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molar mass, pH, and temperature on interfacial tension was investigated for aqueous two-phase systems composed of PEG with molar masses of (1500, 4000, 6000, and 8000) g·mol–1 and potassium phosphate. The temperatures tested were (293 and 313) K at the pH values of 6, 7, and 9. Interfacial tension was determined by using a spinning drop tensiometer and the Vonnegut equation. An increase in both the PEG molar mass and the temperature resulted in an increase ...

The authors have analyzed the main temporal characteristics of the earthquake data in the catalogue of seismicity of New Zealand with the objective of providing a general overview of its content and limitations. To this end we have employed different statistical tools which allow for the objective estimate of times of changes in the seismicity rates as well as providing the main reasons for those changes. We have found that the seismicity record of the largest events (M > 4.0) is bracketed by significant ...

To improve patient compliance and personalised drug delivery, long-acting drug delivery devices (LADDDs), such as implants and inserts, greatly benefit from a customisation in their shape through the emerging 3D-printing technology, since their production usually follows a one-size-fits-most approach. The use of 3D-printing for LADDDs, however, is mainly limited by the shortage of flawlessly 3D-printable, yet biocompatible materials. The present study tackles this issue by introducing a novel, non- ...

Despite the existing research, the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease remains poorly understood with early and accurate diagnosis difficult to achieve. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in biological processes as modulators of transcription and translation. Previous studies have demonstrated a downregulation of several genes in early RA stages and in addition, miRNAs may serve as early biomarkers of subclinical changes in early RA. When comparing the four groups (ANOVA ...
