Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with accessible Lewis acid sites are finding increasing application in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, the structural instability of MOFs when they are exposed to high temperature and/or high pressure often limits their applicability. In this study, two strategies were applied to achieve a MOF catalyst with high stability, activity and selectivity in the reaction of CO2 with styrene oxide to produce styrene carbonate. In the first approach, a MOF with ...

Structural and temporal inhomogeneities can have a marked influence on the performance of inorganic and biocatalytic systems alike. While these subtle variations are hardly ever accessible through bulk or ensemble averaged activity screening, insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying these diverse phenomena are absolutely critical for the development of optimized or novel catalytic systems and processes. Fortunately, state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopy methods have allowed experimental ...

Selection of optimal biomarkers for the identification of different operational taxonomic units (OTUs) may be a hard and tedious task, especially when phylogenetic trees for multiple genes need to be compared. With TaxonGap we present a novel and easy-to-handle software tool that allows visual comparison of the discriminative power of multiple biomarkers for a set of OTUs. The compact graphical output allows for easy comparison and selection of individual biomarkers.Graphical User Interface; Executable ...

In many bacteria the flavoenzyme thymidylate synthase ThyX produces the DNA nucleotide deoxythymidine monophosphate from dUMP, using methylenetetrahydrofolate as carbon donor and NADPH as hydride donor. Because all three substrates bind in close proximity to the catalytic flavin adenine dinucleotide group, substantial flexibility of the ThyX active site has been hypothesized. Using femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, we have studied the conformational heterogeneity and the conformational ...

In Arabidopsis thaliana the R2R3-MYB transcription factor family consists of over 100 members and is implicated in many biological processes, such as plant development, metabolism, senescence, and defense. The R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene AtMYB102 has been shown to respond to salt stress, ABA, JA, and wounding, suggesting that AtMYB102 plays a role in the response of plants to dehydration after wounding. Here, we studied the role of AtMYB102 in the response of A. thaliana to feeding by larvae ...

Nitrogen deprivation increases the triacylglycerol (TAG) content in microalgae but also severely decreases the growth rate. Most approaches that attempted to increase TAG productivity by overexpression or knockdown of specific genes related to the regulation of the lipid synthesis have reported only little success. More insight into the molecular mechanisms related to lipid accumulation and impaired growth rate is needed to find targets for improving TAG productivity. By using the emerging "omics" ...

Abstract The microbial communities living in the human intestine can have profound impact on our well-being and health. However, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms that control this complex ecosystem. Here, based on a deep phylogenetic analysis of the intestinal microbiota in a thousand western adults, we identify groups of bacteria that exhibit robust bistable abundance distributions. These bacteria are either abundant or nearly absent in most individuals, and exhibit decreased temporal ...

Parthenocarpy, the formation of seedless fruits in the absence of functional fertilization, is a desirable trait for several important crop plants, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Seedless fruits can be of great value for consumers, the processing industry, and breeding companies. In this article, we propose a novel strategy to obtain parthenocarpic tomatoes by down-regulation of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway using RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated suppression of chalcone synthase (CHS), ...

Supported metal nanoparticle catalysts are commonly obtained through deposition of metal precursors onto the support using incipient wetness impregnation. Typically, empirical relations between metal nanoparticle structure and catalytic performance are inferred from ensemble averaged data in combination with high-resolution electron microscopy. This approach clearly underestimates the importance of heterogeneities present in a supported metal catalyst batch. Here we show for the first time how incipient ...

Abstract Purpose Aquaporin 7 (AQP7) belongs to the aquaglyceroporin family, which transports glycerol and water. AQP7-deficient mice develop obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperglyceroluria. However, AQP7's pathophysiologic role in humans is not yet known. Methods Three children with psychomotor retardation and hyperglyceroluria were screened for AQP7 mutations. The children were from unrelated families. Urine and plasma glycerol levels were measured using a three-step enzymatic approach. Platelet morphology ...

The metal–organic framework NH2-MIL-53(Al) is the first solid-state material displaying nonlinear optical switching due to a conformational change upon breathing. A switching contrast of at least 38 was observed. This transition originates in the restrained linker mobility in the very narrow pore configuration.

Flavins are highly versatile redox-active and colored cofactors in a large variety of proteins. These do include photoenzymes and photoreceptors, although the vast majority performs non-light-driven physiological functions. Nevertheless, electron transfer between flavins and specific nearby amino acid residues (in particular tyrosine, tryptophan, and presumably histidine and arginine) takes place upon excitation of flavin in many flavoproteins. For oxidized flavoproteins these reactions potentially ...
