In order to elucidate mucosal immunity in HIV‐1 seropositive individuals, we investigated oral mucosa washings from 20 HIV‐1 seropositive patients for the presence of Langerhans cells (LC) and HIV‐1 antigen‐positive cells, and compared the results with those obtained from 20 HIV‐l seronegative healthy individuals. Monoclonal antibodies directed against CDla, HLA‐DR, CD3, and p24 were used to identify LC, T cells and HIV‐l core‐antigens, respectively. In oral mucosa washings from HIV‐l seropositive ...

In the final letter of this astonishing volume Beckett reveals a startlingly self-aware perception to Marthe van Velde: ‘You think you are choosing something, and it is always yourself that you choose; a self that you did not know, if you are lucky’ (p. 684). This letter (in French) describes Beckett's act of looking at a painting by his friend and Marthe's husband Bram van Valde, in the dull light permeating the ‘blue glass’ blackout windows of wartime Paris. Beckett's statement of an inherent existential ...

In the summer of 1967 Samuel Beckett was in Berlin, directing his play Endspiel at the Schiller Theater. ‘Up to the neck in technical muck’, he seemed to be having an abnormally good time. The work has made a great leap last 4 or 5 days. They’re running already and the souffleuse [prompter] is out of work. I had the (for me) bright idea of having them rehearse without me. The thing was sufficiently laid down for there to be little danger. They like that and it has done them good. Shall let them have ...

In his poem ‘Incantata’, written for the late artist and printmaker Mary Farl Powers, Paul Muldoon discerns in his former lover ‘what seems always true of the truly great’ – that is, ‘a winningly inaccurate / sense of your own worth’ and a readiness to ‘second-guess / yourself too readily by far’. It is a definition of greatness that might be applied to Samuel Beckett as well, certainly to the Beckett we meet in the first volume of his correspondence, covering the years 1929 to 1940. Beckett himself applied ...
