Olwen M. Birch, Martin Fuhrmann, Nicholas M. Shaw,
We have developed a radiochemical method for the measurement of biotin synthase activity in vitro. A cell-free extract from an Escherichia coli strain containing a cloned bioB (biotin synthase) gene was incubated with [ 14 C]dethiobiotin, which was converted to [ 14 C]biotin. The assay was used to identify the low molecular weight compounds and two of the proteins that, in addition to the bioB gene product, are required for biotin synthase activity in vitro . The low molecular weight compounds are cysteine; ...

Abstract Background Tooth decay can cause pain, sleepless nights and loss of productive workdays. Fluoridation of drinking water was identified in the 1940s as a cost-effective method of prevention. In the mid-1970s, fluoride toothpastes became widely available. Since then, in high-income countries the prevalence of tooth decay in children has reduced whilst natural tooth retention in older age groups has increased. Most water fluoridation research was carried out before these dramatic changes in ...

Background: For health care services to address the health care needs of populations and respond to changes in needs over time, workforces must be planned. This requires quantitative models to estimate future workforce requirements that take account of population size, oral health needs, evidence-based approaches to addressing needs, and methods of service provision that maximize productivity. The aim of this scoping review was to assess whether and how these 4 elements contribute to existing models ...

This study aims to identify and quantify the extent of current variation in service provision of a genetic testing service for dominant and X-linked retinal dystrophies in the English National Health Service (NHS). National audit data (all test requests and results (n = 1839) issued between 2003 and 2011) and survey of English regional genetic testing services were used. Age- and gender-adjusted standardised testing rates were calculated using indirect standardisation, and survey responses were transcribed ...

Narrowband CCD images of Comet P/Halley (1982i) from 1986 March 1 and 6 in two optical continuum filters have been combined into two-dimensional color maps of the dust coma out to approximately 1.56 × 105 km from the optocenter. We find significant spatial variations in the color of the dust. The envelope of intermediate-mass particles, which is formed around the nucleus as a result of solar radiation pressure, is redder than the remainder of the dust coma. We also find that a strong jet, which is ...

The development of a ferroelectric liquid-crystal-over-single-crystal-silicon spatial light modulator is described. The reflective SLM has an array of 176 X 176 pixels over a clear aperture of 5.28 mm X 5.28 mm. Prototype devices driven from a specially designed high speed frame store have been operated at frame rates of approximately equals 1 kHz.

We demonstrate the advantages of a ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator for optical tweezer array applications. The fast switching speeds of the ferroelectric device (compared to conventional nematic systems) is shown to enable very rapid reconfiguration of trap geometries, controlled, high speed particle movement, and tweezer array multiplexing.
