Background: Acutely agitated patients with schizophrenia who receive intramuscular (IM) medications typically are switched to oral (PO) antipsychotic maintenance therapy. Objective: The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of olanzapine versus those of haloperidol during transition from IM to PO therapy. We used additional data from a previously reported trial to test the hypothesis that the reduction in agitation achieved by IM olanzapine 10 mg or IM haloperidol 7.5 mg would be ...

The locomotor stimulatory effects of nicotine (0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg) and cathinone (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) were assessed in alcohol-preferring (P) and -nonpreferring (NP) rats. Whereas P rats demonstrated enhanced (0.8 mg/kg) or no change (0.4 mg/kg) in spontaneous locomotor activity (SMA) to nicotine, NP animals showed no change (0.4 mg/kg) or depression of activity (0.8 mg/kg). However, following cathinone administration both P and NP rats exhibited an increase in SMA. The above results are discussed in light ...

Rats selectively bred for ethanol preference, that is, alcohol-preferring (P) and -nonpreferring (NP) rats, were trained to discriminate the interoceptive stimuli produced by IP-administered 1,000 mg/kg ethanol (10% v/v) in a two-lever, food-motivated, operant task. Once criterion performance was attained, dose-response experiments indicated an ED50 value for P rats = 354.1 mg/kg, whereas NP rats generated an ED50 value of 495.1 mg/kg, not significantly different from each other. In contrast to these ...

The High Resolution Camera (HRC) is one of the two focal plane instruments on NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory which was successfully launched July 23, 1999. The Chandra Observatory will perform high resolution spectroscopy and imaging in the X-ray band of 0.1 to 10 keV. The HRC instrument consists of two detectors, the HRC-I for imaging and the HRC-S for spectroscopy. In this paper we present an overview of the in-flight performance of the High Resolution Camera and discuss some of the initial scientific ...

1. The premorbid behaviors produced by the administration of cocaine, ethanol, their combination, as well as a metabolite produced by their co-administration, viz. cocaethylene, were defined, determined and quantified in the HS strain of mice. 2. The LD50 for ethanol was 9.71 g/kg in males and 9.45 g/kg in females, whereas the LD50 values in male and female mice for cocaine were 101.55 and 90.00 mg/kg, respectively. 3. The data indicate that clonic-tonic seizures continued into status epilepticus ...

The high resolution camera (HRC) is a microchannel plate based imaging detector for the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) that will be placed in a high earth orbit scheduled for launch in August, 1998. An end-to-end calibration of the HRC and the AXAF high resolution mirror assembly (HRMA) was carried out at the Marshall Space Flight Center's X-Ray Calibration Facility (XRCF). This activity was followed by several modifications to the HRC to improve its performance, and a series of flat field ...

The reaction system [ScCl3(thf)3]–SbCl5–cryptand 222 (L)(thf = tetrahydrofuran, cryptand 222 = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane) has been studied as a possible route to scandium(III)–cryptate complexation. The compound [H2L]Cl2·ScCl3(H2O)3·3H2O 1 was isolated as yellow crystals. Microanalytical and spectroscopic (IR, 1H) data and a crystal-structure determination provided complete identification of 1.
