Cyrnellus is a small genus of Polycentropodidae distributed in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, absent from the Chilean subregion. Two new species are here described: C. boliviensis sp. nov. and C. guyanensis sp. nov. Cyrnellus minimus Banks 1913 considered as a junior synonym of Cyrnellus fraternus (Banks 1905) by Flint (1971) and C. marginalis (Banks 1930) considered as a junior synonym of Cyrnellus fraternus by Flint (1964) are revalidated at the specific level. We provide a key and illustrations ...

Clinical validity assessments of gene-disease associations underpin analysis and reporting in diagnostic genomics, and yet wide variability exists in practice, particularly in use of these assessments for virtual gene panel design and maintenance. Harmonization efforts are hampered by the lack of agreed terminology, agreed gene curation standards, and platforms that can be used to identify and resolve discrepancies at scale. We undertook a systematic comparison of the content of 80 virtual gene ...

Abstract Freshwater ecosystems are the most threatened ecosystems worldwide. Argentinian‐protected areas have been established mainly to protect vertebrates and plants in terrestrial ecosystems. In order to create a comprehensive biodiverse conservation plan, it is crucial to integrate both aquatic and terrestrial systems and to include macroinvertebrates. Here, we address this topic by proposing priority areas of conservation including invertebrates, aquatic ecosystems, and their connectivity and ...

To compare the trophic niche of coexisting larvae of Atopsyche yunguensis and Atopsyche spinosa we analysed their gut contents and found little niche overlap: A. yunguensis fed primarily on Trichoptera and amorphous matter, whereas A. spinosa fed on Diptera. A. spinosa showed both a spatial range and a niche breadth larger than those of A. yunguensis. Behavioural observations on A. spinosa may emphasize the use of chelate anterior legs for securing preys. Both species have been included into the ...

In the last years, the study of how environmental stimuli influence the physiology and specifically the endocrinology of an organism became increasingly important, relying mainly on the quantification of glucocorticoids to monitor animal welfare. Most studies investigating cortisol levels in primates were focused on the impact of social stressors; however, a major concern for the conservation of howler monkeys is the increased habitat fragmentation led by the advancement of the agricultural frontier. ...

Tauopathies, such as Alzheimer's disease, some cases of frontotemporal dementia, corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy, are characterized by aggregates of the microtubule-associated protein tau, which are linked to neuronal death and disease development and can be caused by mutations in the MAPT gene. Six tau isoforms are present in the adult human brain and they differ by the presence of 3(3R) or 4(4R) C-terminal repeats. Only the shortest 3R isoform is present in foetal ...

We study the absorption lines present in the spectra of the long-period cataclysmic variable GK Per during its quiescent state, which are associated with the secondary star. By comparing quiescent data with outburst spectra we infer that the donor star appears identical during the two states and the inner face of the secondary star is not noticeably irradiated by flux from the accreting regions. We obtain new values for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star, KK = 120.5 ± 0.7 km s− ...

We detect the likely optical counterpart to previously reported X-ray QPOs in spectrophotometry of the intermediate polar GK Per during the 1996 dwarf nova outburst. The characteristic time-scales range between 4000 and 6000 s. Although the QPOs are an order of magnitude longer than those detected in the other dwarf novae we show that a new QPO model is not required to explain the long time-scale observed. We demonstrate that the observations are consistent with oscillations being the result of ...

AbstractTrichoptera are relevant members of the freshwater benthos that can exploit a broad variety of habitats. We explored their distribution patterns in Austral South America using a network quantitative approach applied on point occurrence data. We report quantitative dissociation yields for the reaction CH3OH (vOH)→ lim nhνCH3+OH induced by infrared multiphoton excitation of methanol pre-excited to various levels of the OH stretching vibration (vOH=0, 1, 3, 5). The yields are measured by detecting OH using laser induced fluorescence. It is demonstrated that for low levels of pre-excitation (vOH=0, 1, 3) there is a substantial nonlinear intensity dependence, as a higher yield is found for self mode-locked CO2 laser pulses (with higher peak ...
