To compare the trophic niche of coexisting larvae of Atopsyche yunguensis and Atopsyche spinosa we analysed their gut contents and found little niche overlap: A. yunguensis fed primarily on Trichoptera and amorphous matter, whereas A. spinosa fed on Diptera. A. spinosa showed both a spatial range and a niche breadth larger than those of A. yunguensis. We study the absorption lines present in the spectra of the long-period cataclysmic variable GK Per during its quiescent state, which are associated with the secondary star. We detect the likely optical counterpart to previously reported X-ray QPOs in spectrophotometry of the intermediate polar GK Per during the 1996 dwarf nova outburst. We present time-resolved spectrophotometry of GK Per taken on the rise to outburst maximum, in which we detect 5000 s QPOs in the optical emission lines.We use this opportunity to provide a kinematically-resolved analysis of the phenomenon.Observations are consistent with reprocessing o blobs of gas orbiting within the inner accretion disc, and evidence is found for the migration of the QPO source towards the compact star over orbital timescales.
