Effect of chronic renal failure on bone turnover and bone alkaline phosphatase isoforms. Background Biochemical markers of bone turnover are used to monitor metabolic bone disease associated with renal failure. We have applied a comprehensive panel of markers to patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), with particular focus on the isoforms of bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP). In rat islets, progesterone caused a prompt concentration-dependent inhibition of glucose-stimulated insulin release with an IC50 of 10 μM at 8.4 mM glucose. The inhibition was specific since both testosterone and 17β-estradiol had no such effect. The degree of inhibition was similar in islets from male and female rats. The inhibition was not blocked in PTX-treated islets thus ruling out the Gi/Go proteins as mediators of the inhibition. Progesterone inhibited both glucose- and BayK-8644-stimulated ...

Abstract Clinical and serologic studies on 94 patients suspected of having gonococcal arthritis or Reiter's syndrome are reported. Twenty‐eight patients had arthritis due to a Neisserian organism. Causative organisms were identified as gonococci in 19 instances. The species of the remaining 9 organisms was not identified. Seven patients exhibited the complete Reiter's syndrome. Neither clinical features nor measurement of gonococcal or Bedsonia antibodies were sufficient to establish a diagnosis ...

Abstract Two doses of gold sodium thiomalate were compared for their effect on rheumatoid arthritis. Thirty‐seven patients with active disease for longer than 6 months were treated with 25 mg of gold sodium thiomalate for an average of 29.6 weeks, then at biweekly or monthly intervals to complete 2 years of treatment. Thirty‐eight patients were given more than twice as much gold salt at the same intervals on a flexible dose schedule that produced serum gold levels which averaged 332 μUg/dl during ...

Donald A. Person, John T. Sharp, Martin D. Lidsky,

Unseparated peripheral blood leukocytes obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were cytotoxic for synovial cells. The cytotoxic reactions produced by RA leukocytes were more frequent and of greater magnitude than cytotoxicity induced by leukocytes from normal persons and patients with other diseases, primarily connective tissue diseases. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity of RA leukocytes was greater for RA synovial cells than for nonrheumatoid synovial cells, in contrast to the cytotoxicity ...

W.M. Sharp, Mártin Lampe,

The head of a relativistic electron beam propagating into un-ionized or weakly ionized gas is not self-pinched and expands freely, causing the beam to take on a ’’trumpet’’ shape. The region where the beam pinches, referred to as the ’’pinch point’’, moves steadily back into the beam because of the reduced ionization rate at the expanding beam head and energy loss to the induced electric field. This beam head ’’erosion’’ is modeled by assuming that the axial beam profile is stationary in a reference frame ...
