Observations on individual differences in human blood aside from the 4 blood groups, support the idea that in transfusion the blood of the donor and recipient is, as a rule, not identical in biochemical constitution even though belonging to the same blood group. In the literature instances are reported in which the first transfusion was uneventful while a repeated transfusion with the same compatible donor was followed by severe symptoms,, , , , and others. There are, however, only casual remarks on the ...

GM Stone, Lewis Martin,

The uptake of tritiated oestradiol and oestrone by the uterus of the ovariectomised mouse has been studied following local application. With both compounds there was a peak in tissue radioactivity approximately 1 minute after application followed by a steady decline over the next 12 hours. The rate of decrease in activity was more rapid with oestrone than with oestradiol and may explain the lower biological activity of oestrone in local tests.

SUMMARY In tests of vaginal cornification, anti-oestrogenic activity has been demonstrated in dimethylstilboestrol, ethylstilboestrol and n -propylstilboestrol. It has not been detected in some other stilboestrols. Dimethylstilboestrol, the most potent anti-oestrogen, inhibits the increase in vaginal mitosis and epithelial thickness which normally follows the administration of oestrone to the ovariectomized mouse. This contrasts with the action of substances like testosterone and progesterone, which ...

C. A. FINN, Lewis Martin,

The control mechanisms involved in implantation can be divided into those operating from outside the uterus and intracellular controls within the organ. The hormones of the ovary ensure that uterine preparation is synchronized with the presence of a mature blastocyst in the uterine lumen, whilst the intracellular controls regulate and integrate the changes which take place within the organ and between it and the blastocyst. A prominent feature of these changes in many species is the transformation ...

Lewis Martin, C. A. FINN, GAIL TRINDER,

SUMMARY The uteri of untreated ovariectomized mice consisted almost entirely of myometrium and connective tissue stroma. After oestrogenic stimulation these tissues underwent marked hypertrophy, but showed little proliferation. The luminal epithelium underwent marked hyperplasia, with most cells dividing twice to quadruple cell numbers by 35–40 h, when they made up 10–12% of the uterine tissue volume and 20% of the total uterine cell population. The proliferative response was rapid, highly synchronized ...

Lewis Martin, Ben Corry,

Sodium channel blockers are used to control electrical excitability in cells as a treatment for epileptic seizures and cardiac arrhythmia, and to provide short term control of pain. Development of the next generation of drugs that can selectively target one of the nine types of voltage-gated sodium channel expressed in the body requires a much better understanding of how current channel blockers work. Here we make use of the recently determined crystal structure of the bacterial voltage gated sodium ...

Lewis Martin, Rebecca R. Chao, Ben Corry,

Molecular dynamics simulations were used to examine the partitioning behaviour of the local anaesthetic benzocaine and the anti-epileptic phenytoin into lipid bilayers, a factor that is critical to their mode of action. Free energy methods are used to quantify the thermodynamics of drug movement between water and octanol as well as for permeation across a POPC membrane. Both drugs are shown to favourably partition into the lipid bilayer from water and are likely to accumulate just inside the lipid ...
