The Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu on 6 December 2020. One day after the recovery, the gas species retained in the sample container were extracted and measured on-site and stored in gas collection bottles. The container gas consists of helium and neon with an extraterrestrial 3 He/ 4 He and 20 Ne/ 22 Ne ratios, along with some contaminant terrestrial atmospheric gases. A mixture of solar and Earth’s atmospheric gas is the best explanation for the container ...

Mantle-derived noble gases in volcanic gases are powerful tracers of terrestrial volatile evolution, as they contain mixtures of both primordial (from Earth’s accretion) and secondary (e.g., radiogenic) isotope signals that characterize the composition of deep Earth. However, volcanic gases emitted through subaerial hydrothermal systems also contain contributions from shallow reservoirs (groundwater, crust, atmosphere). Deconvolving deep and shallow source signals is critical for robust interpretations ...

We report near-infrared multiphoton absorption induced visible photoluminescence in multiwall carbon nanotube (MWN1) suspensions. Comparison is made with the photoluminescence spectrum of graphite suspensions. Intensity dependence of the integrated spectra and photoluminescence decay are investigated. MWNT show increased nonlinear behaviour and reduced thermal behaviour compared with graphite.

Malaria during pregnancy causes serious disease that is associated with sequestration in the placenta of Plasmodium falciparum infected erythrocytes that adhere to several host receptors, including chondroitin sulfate A (CSA). The principal CSA binding ligand associated with placental sequestration is the P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1), encoded by the var2csa gene. We disrupted the var2csa gene in two allogeneic parasites and ablated CSA binding. However, in one parasite line ...

Although of late the annual quantity of mined material has reduced due to the global financial situation, the average amount of material mined was of the order of 700 kt (Ti eq). To date the most common process used for beneficiating the ilmenite in Australia has been the Becher process to produce synthetic rutile of the order of ...

Clues to unraveling the origin and history of terrestrial volatiles lie in the noble gas record of Earth's mantle. However, the low abundance of heavy noble gases (Ar-Kr-Xe) in mantle-derived rocks presents a major analytical challenge that limits our understanding of mantle volatile evolution. Here, we employ a new technique of ultrahigh precision dynamic mass spectrometry to measure Ar-Kr-Xe isotopes in mantle-derived gas collected from Mt. Etna (Italy) and Eifel (Germany), which both tap depleted ...

The age of iron meteorites implies that accretion of protoplanets began during the first millions of years of the solar system. Due to the heat generated by 26Al decay, many early protoplanets were fully differentiated with an igneous crust produced during the cooling of a magma ocean and the segregation at depth of a metallic core. The formation and nature of the primordial crust generated during the early stages of melting is poorly understood, due in part to the scarcity of available samples. ...

The terrestrial carbon to nitrogen ratio is a key geochemical parameter that can provide information on the nature of Earth's precursors, accretion/differentiation processes of our planet, as well as on the volatile budget of Earth. In principle, this ratio can be determined from the analysis of volatile elements trapped in mantle-derived rocks like mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), corrected for fractional degassing during eruption. However, this correction is critical and previous attempts have adopted ...

Identifying the origin of noble gases in Earth's mantle can provide crucial constraints on the source and timing of volatile (C, N, H2O, noble gases, etc.) delivery to Earth. It remains unclear whether the early Earth was able to directly capture and retain volatiles throughout accretion or whether it accreted anhydrously and subsequently acquired volatiles through later additions of chondritic material. Here, we report high-precision noble gas isotopic data from volcanic gases emanating from, in ...

Abstract Comets represent some of the most pristine bodies in our solar system and can provide a unique insight into the chemical makeup of the early solar system. Due to their icy volatile-rich nature, they may have played an important role in delivering volatile elements and organic material to the early Earth. Understanding how comets form can therefore provide a wealth of information on how the composition of volatile elements evolved in the solar system from the presolar molecular cloud up ...

Their breeding classically consists of an initial selection on spaced plants for highly heritable traits such as disease resistances and heading date, followed by familial selection on swards for forage yield and quality traits. Recently, common genetic risk factors for intracranial aneurysm (IA) and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH) were found to explain a large amount of disease heritability and therefore have potential to be used for genetic risk prediction. We constructed a genetic risk score to (1) predict ASAH incidence and IA presence (combined set of unruptured IA and ASAH) and (2) assess its association with patient characteristics.

Sharing genomic variant interpretations across laboratories promotes consistency in variant assertions. A landscape analysis of Australian clinical genetic-testing laboratories in 2017 identified that, despite the national-accreditation-body recommendations encouraging laboratories to submit genotypic data to clinical databases, fewer than 300 variants had been shared to the ClinVar public database. Consultations with Australian laboratories identified resource constraints limiting routine application ...

Previous evidence indicates that adjuvant, short-course androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves metastasis-free survival when given with primary radiotherapy for intermediate-risk and high-risk localised prostate cancer. However, the value of ADT with postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy is unclear.
