The Japan Cancer Surveillance Research Group is involved in cancer monitoring in Japan (1–3). This group estimated the cancer incidence in 2003 as part of the Monitoring of Cancer Incidence in Japan (MCIJ) project, on the basis of data collected from 13 of 31 population-based cancer registries: Miyagi, Yamagata, Chiba, Kanagawa, Niigata, Fukui, Shiga, Osaka, Tottori, Okayama, Hiroshima, Saga and Nagasaki. If data from all 31 registries were used, this would have led to a large underestimation of national ...

Type 2 diabetes is known to affect alveolar bone loss (ABL). The purpose of this study was to examine whether impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is associated with ABL, as is diabetes.A case-control study was performed with 664 Japanese men aged 46-57 years. Panoramic radiographs revealed 513 severe ABL cases, 22 moderate ABL cases, and 129 controls with good alveolar bone. Diabetes status was classified into normal glucose tolerance (NGT), impaired fasting glucose (IFG), IGT, and newly diagnosed diabetes ...

According to the National Vital Statistics data, age‐standardized mortality rates (ASRs) of lung cancer have shown slightly declining trends in Japan for both men and women. In order to evaluate whether this tendency will continue, a Bayesian age‐period‐cohort (APC) model was applied using the National Vital Statistics data from 1952 to 2001. In the projection, a Gaussian autoregressive prior model was applied to smooth age, period, and cohort effects from its 2 immediate predecessors by extrapolation. ...

Background Folate intake may be related to decreased risk of colorectal cancer and adenomas. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key regulatory enzyme in folate metabolism. We examined the relation between plasma folate status and colorectal adenomas with reference to effect modification by the genetic polymorphism (C677T) of MTHFR.

The concepts of lifetime and age-conditional probabilities of developing and dying of cancer are introduced as indexes to understand the risk of cancer. In this paper, we estimated the lifetime and age-conditional probabilities of developing and dying of cancer in 2001 and 2005, respectively, in Japan. It is estimated that one in two Japanese males and one in three females will develop cancer, and one in four Japanese males and one in six females will die of cancer. Moreover, the probabilities of ...

Background: Quantitative measures of the burden of tobacco smoking in Asian countries are limited. We estimated the population attributable fraction (PAF) of mortality associated with smoking in Japan, using pooled data from three large-scale cohort studies. Methods: In total, 296,836 participants (140,026 males and 156,810 females) aged 40-79 years underwent baseline surveys during the 1980s and early 1990s. The average follow-up period was 9.6 years. PAFs for all-cause mortality and individual tobacco- ...

Background: Smoking is associated with the number of teeth. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of number of teeth with smoking and smoking cessation. Methods: Subjects included 547 males aged between 55 and 75 years. Oral examinations were conducted in 2005. Smoking status information was collected from questionnaire surveys conducted in 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005. The relationship between having more than eight missing teeth and smoking status was estimated with adjusted ...

Abstract Cancer is one of the major targets of disease control programs in Japan. A Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the long‐term trends of mortality related to overall cancer and the 15 most common cancers based on published data from the National Vital Statistics of Japan between 1958 and 2004. Since 1996, a decline has been seen in overall cancer for both sexes in Japan. Most of the common sites, including cancers of the stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and lung and leukemia ...

Better information on lung cancer occurrence in lifelong nonsmokers is needed to understand gender and racial disparities and to examine how factors other than active smoking influence risk in different time periods and geographic regions. We pooled information on lung cancer incidence and/or death rates among self-reported never-smokers from 13 large cohort studies, representing over 630,000 and 1.8 million persons for incidence and mortality, respectively. We also abstracted population-based data ...

The total number of incidences in Japan for 2004 was estimated as 623 275 (C00–C96). To evaluate the impact of smoking cessation on individuals and populations, we examined the decrease in risk of lung cancer death in male ex‐smokers by age at quitting by pooling the data from three large‐scale cohort studies in Japan. For simplicity, subjects were limited to male never smokers and former or current smokers who started smoking at ages 18–22 years, and 110 002 men aged 40–79 years at baseline were included. During the mean follow‐up of 8.5 years, 968 men died from lung cancer. The ...

The Japan Cancer Surveillance Research Group and the Research Group for Population-based Cancer Registration in Japan have estimated cancer incidences in Japan from 1975 to 2000 based on selected population-based cancer registries (1). However, these estimations were restricted to major cancer sites. Neither more detailed sites nor histological type have yet been reported, although these analyses are of clinical interest. Our research group collected data on newly diagnosed cancers between 1993 and ...

To evaluate the hypothesis that, in terms of all-cause death, drinking alcohol 1–4 days per week is less harmful than daily (5–7 days/week) drinking of the same quantity of alcohol, a prospective cohort study using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted in Japan between 1990 and 2003 of 88,746 subjects (41,702 men and 47,044 women) aged 40–69 years at baseline. Among male regular drinkers consuming alcohol more than 1 day per week, light drinkers (<300 g/week) showed no increase in all-cause ...
