Linking up the user-friendly and low-priced FTIR with the more sophisticated and high-priced 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopies, an improved method to determine the degree of acetylation (DA) of chitins and chitosans was outlined. The method was established for the most complex polymorphic form (α-chitin) and for the most problematic range of DA values (most acetylated samples) and can easily be extended to the other polymorphic forms (β- and γ-chitins) and to other ranges of DA values.

The distal-convoluted tubule (DCT) of the kidney absorbs NaCl mainly via an Na+-Cl− cotransporter located at the apical membrane, and Na+, K+ ATPase at the basolateral side. Cl− transport across the basolateral membrane is thought to be conductive, but the corresponding channels have not yet been characterized. In the present study, we investigated Cl− channels on microdissected mouse DCTs using the patch-clamp technique. A channel of ∼9 pS was found in 50% of cell-attached patches showing anionic ...

The transport of Na+, K+ and Cl- across the isolated epithelium of the eel intestine was studied using a combination of four experimental strategies: short-circuiting, measurements of intracellular potentials and ion concentrations, application of a variety of transport inhibitors and measurement of unidirectional fluxes with radioactive tracers. When short-circuited, the system performs a net transport of Cl- and Na+ towards the blood side, with a stoichiometry approaching 2, and a much smaller ...

The distal convoluted tubule (DCT) is a heterogeneous segment subdivided into early (DCT1) and late (DCT2) parts, depending on the distribution of various transport systems. We do not have an exhaustive picture of the Cl(-) channels on the basolateral side: the presence of ClC-K2 channels is generally accepted, whereas that of ClC-K1 remains controversial. We used here single-cell RT-PCR and patch clamp to probe Cl(-) channel heterogeneity in microdissected mouse DCT at the molecular and functional ...

This research has considerable potential value in assisting competition authorities design optimal policies by having a better understanding of the impact that such policies, their specific features and manner of administration, have on the behaviour of cartel participants. More empathetic physicians are more likely to achieve higher patient satisfaction, adherence to treatments, and health outcomes. In the context of medical education, it is thus important to understand how personality might condition the empathetic development of medical students. Single institutional evidence shows associations between students' personality and empathy. This multi-institutional study aimed to assess such associations across institutions, looking for personality differences between ...

Label propagation has been shown to be effective in many automatic segmentation applications. However, its reliance on accurate image alignment means that segmentation results can be affected by any registration errors which occur. Patch-based methods relax this dependence by avoiding explicit one-to-one correspondence assumptions between images but are still limited by the search window size. Too small, and it does not account for enough registration error; too big, and it becomes more likely to ...

Cardiac phenotypes, such as left ventricular (LV) mass, demonstrate high heritability although most genes associated with these complex traits remain unidentified. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have relied on conventional 2D cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) as the gold-standard for phenotyping. However this technique is insensitive to the regional variations in wall thickness which are often associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and require large cohorts to reach significance. ...

The accurate measurement of 3D cardiac function is an important task in the analysis of cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) images. However, short-axis image acquisitions with thick slices are commonly used in clinical practice due to constraints of acquisition time, signal-to-noise ratio and patient compliance. In this situation, the estimation of a high-resolution image can provide an approximation of the underlaying 3D measurements. In this paper, we develop a novel algorithm for the estimation of ...

Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiometabolic disease, but the effect of body composition on vascular aging and arterial stiffness remains uncertain. We investigated relationships among body composition, blood pressure, age, and aortic pulse wave velocity in healthy individuals. Pulse wave velocity in the thoracic aorta, an indicator of central arterial stiffness, was measured in 221 volunteers (range, 18–72 years; mean, 40.3±13 years) who had no history of cardiovascular disease using cardiovascular ...

13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy has been shown to be a powerful tool to quantify the degree of acetylation of chitin and chitosan. In order to optimise the parameters which afford quantitative 13C cross-polarisation magic-angle spinning NMR spectra, a detailed relaxation study has been carried out on selected chitin and deacetylated chitin samples. A relaxation delay of 5 s and a contact time of 1 ms have been found to yield quantitative NMR spectra of samples with deacetylation degree values of 0.68 ...

The EU Leniency Programme aims to encourage the dissolution of existing cartels and the deterrence of future cartels, through self-reporting and/or significant cooperation by cartel members during an investigation. However, the European Commission guidelines are vague in terms of the factors that influence the granting and scale of leniency-related penalty reductions. In this paper, the empirical analysis of the penalty reductions that have been granted shows, as expected, that the first reporting ...

Atlases encode valuable anatomical and functional information from a population. In this work, a bi-ventricular cardiac atlas was built from a unique data set, which consists of high resolution cardiac MR images of 1000+ normal subjects. Based on the atlas, statistical methods were used to study the variation of cardiac shapes and the distribution of cardiac motion across the spatio-temporal domain. We have shown how statistical parametric mapping (SPM) can be combined with a general linear model ...

The impact of this reform is now being witnessed, which justifies the need to evaluate its results as far as best practices in PHC are concerned. Accurate localization of anatomical landmarks is an important step in medical imaging, as it provides useful prior information for subsequent image analysis and acquisition methods. It is particularly useful for initialization of automatic image analysis tools (e.g. segmentation and registration) and detection of scan planes for automated image acquisition. Landmark localization has been commonly performed using learning based approaches, such as classifier and/or regressor models. However, trained ...

Such policies have shown to be a powerful tool in inducing firms to self-report or cooperate with a cartel investigation in exchange for a reduction in sanctions. Since they reduce sanctions ...
