Mary Ann Rhode, Mary K. Barger,
Since the late nineteenth century, the average postpartum woman has been subjected to a great deal of swabbing, soaking, and spraying, all in the name of perineal care. Many elaborate regimens have been devised to prevent infection, promote healing, and provide comfort to the mother, often based on little physiologic rationale or research data. All of these regimens have taken away valuable time and energy that the new mother needs for more important tasks. A review of past and current perineal ...

Syphilis remains a significant problem in the United States. The prison environment is an ideal location to identify and treat syphilis. We undertook this study to describe the correlates and risk factors for syphilis among incarcerated women in Rhode Island. The study design was a review of all cases of syphilis identified through routine screening in the state prison and a case control study. Between 1992 and 1998, among 6,249 incarcerated women, 86 were found to have syphilis; of these, 29 were ...

Citizen science is emerging as an increasingly viable way to support existing water monitoring efforts. This article assesses whether water quality data collected by large numbers of volunteers are as reliable as data collected under strict oversight of a government agency, and considers the potential of citizen science to expand spatial and temporal coverage of water monitoring networks. The analysis hinges on comparison of data on water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) in freshwater streams ...

The impact of IPV on use of preventive health services is not well understood. Although several studies indicate that female victims of IPV have higher rates of alcohol abuse, this has not been replicated in population-based studies. The association of IPV with smoking has not been a major research focus. The purpose of this study was to examine the association ...

Abstract The cytokine IL-21 is closely related to IL-2 and IL-15, a cytokine family that uses the common γ-chain for signaling. IL-21 is expressed by activated CD4+ T cells. We examined the role of IL-21 in the autoimmune disease experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model for human multiple sclerosis. IL-21 administration before induction of EAE with a neuroantigen, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein peptide 35-55, and adjuvant enhanced the inflammatory influx into the CNS, ...
