The cellular homologs of the ets gene from the avian erythroblastosis retrovirus E26 have been studied in chickens, humans, mice, and cats. In this report a further evolutionary step is taken by isolating and characterizing a Drosophila ets-related genomic clone. Sequence analysis of this clone has shown it to contain the 3′ end of the v-ets gene, called ets-2, corresponding to the last two exons of chicken ets. The predicted amino acid sequence was found to have over 90% homology when compared ...

Chicken DNA segments homologus to the ets region from the transforming gene of avian erythroblastosis virus, E26, were molecularly cloned and shown to be almost identical to v-ets by sequence analysis. The transforming gene product, p135, of E26 has a tripartite structure, with amino acids derived from the retroviral gag gene fused with amino acids from two cell-derived sequences, myb and ets. Whereas the mammalian ets genes are present on two chromosomes, the chicken ets sequence is present as ...

Debbie Watson, Mary Jane McWilliams, P Lapis, J A Lautenberger, Clifford W. Schweinfest, Takis S. Papas,

Cellular ets sequences homologous to v-ets of the avian leukemia virus E26 are highly conserved. In mammals the ets sequences are dispersed on two separate chromosomal loci, called ets-1 and ets-2. To determine the structure of these two genes and identify the open reading frames that code for the putative proteins, we have sequenced human ets-1 cDNAs and ets-2 cDNA clones obtained from both human and mouse. The human ETS1 gene is capable of encoding a protein of 441 amino acids. This protein is ...

Increasing recognition of the statistical burden posed by HNPCC (5 to 6 percent of all colorectal cancer) mandates that physicians have a better understanding of the genetics, natural history, and distinction between the hereditary site-specific variant (Lynch syndrome I) and the Cancer Family Syndrome (Lynch syndrome II). This study examined the effects of parental depression symptoms, economic disadvantage, and parenting behaviors in 180 children and adolescents of depressed parents (ages 9-15 years-old). Analyses revealed that while parental depression symptoms, economic disadvantage, and disrupted parenting behaviors were related to children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms, disrupted parenting (e.g., intrusive, neglectful parenting) accounted for the association of parental depressive symptoms and economic ...

Background Microbiome dysbiosis predisposes to colorectal cancer (CRC), but a population-based study of oral antibiotic exposure and risk patterns is lacking. Objective To assess the association between oral antibiotic use and CRC risk. Design A matched case–control study (incident CRC cases and up to five matched controls) was performed using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink from 1989 to 2012. Studies in pregnant ewes have shown that fish oil supplementation during late pregnancy can increase lamb vigour at birth and may provide a means of reducing neonatal mortality in the sheep flock. However, fish oil also reduces colostrum production by the ewe which could offset the developmental benefits for lamb survival. To counteract the detrimental effects on colostrum, an experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of supplementing late gestation ewes with fish oil and digestible ...

High-quality pre-registration student nurse training and development is integral to developing a sustainable and competent global nursing workforce. Internationally, student nurse recruitment rates have increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, attrition rates for student nurses are high. During the pandemic, many student nurses considered leaving the programme due to academic concerns, feeling overwhelmed, and doubting their clinical skills. Little was known about the extent ...

ABSTRACT The Bcl-2 and Bcl-x proteins suppress programmed cell death, whereas Bax promotes apoptosis. We investigated the pattern of expression of Bcl-2, Bax and Bcl-x during neuronal differentiation and development. All three proteins were widely expressed in neonatal rats but, in the adult, Bax levels were 20-to 140-fold lower in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and heart muscle, whereas Bcl-x was not downregulated in any of the tissues examined. In the cerebral cortex and cerebellum, the decrease ...
