Prenatal androgen treatment can alter LH secretion in female offspring, often with adverse effects on ovulatory function. However, female spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), renowned for their highly masculinized genitalia, are naturally exposed to high androgen levels in utero. To determine whether LH secretion in spotted hyenas is affected by prenatal androgens, we treated pregnant hyenas with antiandrogens (flutamide and finasteride). Later, adult offspring of the antiandrogen-treated (AA) mothers ...

Sofia A. Wahaj, Ned J. Place, Mary L. Weldele, Stephen E. Glickman, Kay E. Holekamp,

Integrated field and laboratory studies of long-lived, large-bodied mammals are rare but offer unique opportunities to elucidate the behavioral ecology of these animals. Here, we used this approach to examine whether siblicide in spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) is obligate or facultative. First, we tested predictions of obligate and facultative hypotheses by using ultrasonography to compare litter size before and after parturition and identify potential causes of litter reduction. Second, we compared ...

This response to Timothy Tippins and Jeffrey Wittmann's article “Empirical and Ethical Problems with Custody Recommendations: A Call for Clinical Humility and Judicial Vigilance” builds upon the authors’ conclusions that custody evaluations cannot and should not be a substitute for the socio‐legal judgment of the best interests of the child. Recognizing that clinical humility and judicial vigilance may not be sufficient to restrain the misuse of psychological evaluation, we offer for consideration ...

... of One in Late Medieval French Didactic Poetry Mary Frances Brown Sarah Kay . The Place of Thought: The Complexity of One in Late Medieval French Didactic Poetry. Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania ... in the didactic texts that will follow it, Kay also acknowledges (as she has demonstrated in other studies) that the romance as a whole is "dialogic" and "infinitely slippery" (179). This suggests that the "complexity of one" is a powerful theoretical paradigm that must nevertheless be applied to a corpus carefully circumscribed, like the "common places" of fourteenth-century didacticism.
