Red light running causes more than 100,000 crashes and 1,000 fatalities annually and results in an estimated economic loss of over $14 billion per year in the United States. Red light running is a significant safety issue facing communities which rarely have the resources to place additional law enforcement in the field. As a result, communities are increasingly turning to automated red light running camera-enforcement systems to address the problem. The effectiveness of red light running cameras ...

The magnetic properties and the microstructure of Ba-ferrite powders prepared by the sol–gel route were investigated. Amorphous gels were processed with a varying Fe/Ba ratio and then powder materials were obtained by heat treating at temperatures between 900 and 1000 °C for 1–4 h. The results showed that increasing time and temperature was beneficial to the saturation magnetisation (Ms), whereas the coercivity (Hci) was only slightly affected. The variation of the Fe/Ba ratio led to the formation ...

Nanolaminate HfO2–TiO2 films are grown by reactive sputter deposition on unheated fused SiO2, sequentially annealed at 573to973K, and studied by x-ray diffraction. A nanocrystalline structure of orthorhombic (o) HfTiO4 adjacent to an interface followed by monoclinic (m) Hf1−xTixO2 is identified. m-Hf1−xTixO2, a metastable phase, is isomorphous with m-HfO2 and a high pressure phase, m-HfTiO4. A Vegard’s law analysis shows that the Ti atomic fraction in m-Hf1−xTixO2 is much greater than Ti equilibrium ...

Red light running (RLR) is a serious safety issue that results in more than 100,000 crashes and 1,000 fatalities annually. In Iowa, RLR accounts for 21% of total crashes at signalized intersections and 35% of fatal and major-injury crashes at signalized intersections, according to data analyzed from 2001 to 2006. As transportation agencies struggle to address RLR, they turn increasingly to the use of red light camera enforcement. In Iowa, three communities currently use RLR camera enforcement. One ...

Arrestins can facilitate desensitization or signaling by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) in many cells, but their roles in platelets remain uncharacterized. Because of recent reports that arrestins can serve as scaffolds to recruit phosphatidylinositol-3 kinases (PI3K)s to GPCRs, we sought to determine whether arrestins regulate PI3K-dependent Akt signaling in platelets, with consequences for thrombosis. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments demonstrate that arrestin-2 associates with p85 PI3Kα/β ...

Lattice expansion occurs with diminishing crystallite size. O 2p→Hf 5d interband absorption dominates the optical edge at energy E≥6.24 eV, with an optical band gap, Eo=5.48±0.023, which is independent of crystallite size. However, the strength of a localized resonant band, with onset at 5.65 ...

Abstract Two major pathways contribute to Ras-proximate-1–mediated integrin activation in stimulated platelets. Calcium and diacyglycerol-regulated guanine nucleotide exchange factor I (CalDAG-GEFI, RasGRP2) mediates the rapid but reversible activation of integrin αIIbβ3, while the adenosine diphosphate receptor P2Y12, the target for antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, facilitates delayed but sustained integrin activation. To establish CalDAG-GEFI as a target for antiplatelet therapy, we compared ...

The relief of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) remains daunting, because pharmacologic intervention works incompletely and is accompanied by multiple side effects. Transplantation of human cells that make specific biologic agents that can potentially modulate the sensory responses that are painful would be very useful to treat problems such as pain. To address this need for clinically useful human cells, the human neuronal NT2 cell line was used as a source to isolate a unique human ...

The accurate mapping of forest carbon stocks is essential for understanding the global carbon cycle, for assessing emissions from deforestation, and for rational land-use planning. Remote sensing (RS) is currently the key tool for this purpose, but RS does not estimate vegetation biomass directly, and thus may miss significant spatial variations in forest structure. We test the stated accuracy of pantropical carbon maps using a large independent field dataset.Tropical forests of the Amazon basin. ...

Under stressful conditions nucleotides are released from dying cells into the extracellular space, where they can bind to purinergic P2X and P2Y receptors. High concentrations of extracellular ATP in particular induce P2X7-mediated signaling, which leads to inflammasome activation. This in turn leads to the processing and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, like interleukin (IL)−1β. During neurodegenerative diseases, innate immune responses are shaped by microglia and we have previously identified ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is a human pathogen that causes acute and chronic pediatric diarrhea. The hallmark of EPEC infection is the formation of attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions in the intestinal epithelium. Formation of A/E lesions is mediated by genes located on the pathogenicity island locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE), which encode the adhesin intimin, a type III secretion system (T3SS) and six effectors, including the essential translocated intimin receptor (Tir). To better understand the origins of fetal platelet function, we have evaluated the contribution of the fetal-specific RNA binding protein Lin28b in the megakaryocyte/platelet lineage. Because activated fetal platelets have very low levels of P-selectin, we hypothesized that the expression of platelet P-selectin is part of a fetal-specific hematopoietic program ...

Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical ...

Clustering of the enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) type III secretion system (T3SS) effector translocated intimin receptor (Tir) by intimin leads to actin polymerisation and pyroptotic cell death in macrophages. The effect of Tir clustering on the viability of EPEC-infected intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) is unknown. We show that EPEC induces pyroptosis in IECs in a Tir-dependent but actin polymerisation-independent manner, which was enhanced by priming with interferon gamma (IFNγ). Mechanistically, ...

Thermal sensitivity of tropical trees A key uncertainty in climate change models is the thermal sensitivity of tropical forests and how this value might influence carbon fluxes. Sullivan et al. measured carbon stocks and fluxes in permanent forest plots distributed globally. This synthesis of plot networks across climatic and biogeographic gradients shows that forest thermal sensitivity is dominated by high daytime temperatures. This extreme condition depresses growth rates and shortens the time ...

Wheat roots are known to play an important role in the yield performance under water-limited conditions. Three consecutive years trials (2015, 2016, and 2017) were conducted in a glasshouse in 160 cm length tubes on a set of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes under contrasting water regimes (1) to assess genotypic variability in root weight density distribution in the soil profile, biomass partitioning and total water used; (2) to determine the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic signatures of plant ...
