Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibres are a novel fibrous nanomaterial with increasing applications in a variety of fields. While the biological effects of TiO2 nanoparticles have been extensively studied, the toxicological characterization of TiO2 nanofibres is far from being complete. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity of commercially available anatase TiO2 nanofibres using TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) and crocidolite asbestos as non-fibrous or fibrous benchmark materials. The evaluated endpoints ...

The elucidation of toxicity determinants of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is still incomplete. Functionalization with carboxyl groups is, however, commonly used to mitigate MWCNT toxicity, although the rationale for the mitigating effect has not been fully clarified yet. In this work, two optimized chemical vapor deposition methods were employed to obtain MWCNT of comparable length but different diameter, which were subsequently functionalized. For MWCNT of diameter larger than 40 nm, no ...

It is known that the adsorption of bioactive molecules provides engineered nanoparticles (NP) with novel biological activities. However, the biological effects of the adsorbed molecules may also be modified by the interaction with NP. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a powerful pro-inflammatory compound, is a common environmental contaminant and is present in several body compartments such as the gut. We recently observed that the co-incubation of LPS with TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) markedly potentiates ...

Amorphous silica nanoparticles (ASNP) can be synthetized via several processes, 2 of which are the thermal route (to yield pyrogenic silica) and the wet route from a solution containing silicate salts (to obtain precipitated, colloidal, mesoporous silica, or silica gel). Both methods of synthesis lead to ASNP that are applied as food additive (E551). Current food regulation does not require that production methods of additives are indicated on the product label, and, thus, the ASNP are listed without ...

Length and aspect ratio represent important toxicity determinants of fibrous nanomaterials. We have previously shown that anatase TiO2 nanofibers (TiO2 NF) cause a dose-dependent decrease of cell viability as well as the loss of epithelial barrier integrity in polarized airway cell monolayers. Herein we have investigated the impact of fiber shortening, obtained by ball-milling, on the biological effects of TiO2 NF of industrial origin. Long TiO2 NF (L-TiO2 NF) were more cytotoxic than their shortened ...

A general model useful to assess the applicability, in terms of safety and efficiency, of nanosilver sols in real applications was developed. This led to the definition of an operative parameter, named Quality Index (QI), able to rank the capacity of the samples to be applied effectively in safe concentration ranges on the basis of the mere knowledge of the toxicological and antibacterial limits of the samples and of the fraction of silver ions (Ag+) with respect the total silver in the samples and ...

Glutamate transport in early, undifferentiated oligodendrocytic precursors has not been characterized thus far. Here we show that human oligodendroglioma Hs683 cells are not endowed with EAAT-dependent anionic amino acid transport. However, in these cells, but not in U373 human glioblastoma cells, valproic acid (VPA), an inhibitor of histone deacetylases, markedly induces SLC1A1 mRNA, which encodes for the glutamate transporter EAAT3. The effect is detectable after 8 h and persists up to 120 h of ...

Introduction Because of their unique physico-chemical properties, CNTs have attracted a great deal of research interest and have many promising industrial applications. However, this also increases the exposure potential for workers, raising the need to understand their hazard for an effective occupational health and safety management. CNTs can induce lung inflammation, granuloma formation, fibrosis and cancer in rodents; in particular, MWCNTs are known to induce in vitro markers of remodelling and fibrosis. ...

In a growing group of human cancers, glutamine (Gln) transport is considered a possible therapeutic target to achieve tumor control. However, Gln transport is mediated by several carriers in human cells, thus complicating the delineation of a strategy to obtain an effective intracellular shortage of the amino acid. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, we have investigated the effects of Gln depletion on two cell lines (Hs683 and HOG) of human oligodendroglioma (OD), a rare brain tumors characterized ...

BackgroundHealth-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment is often reported among COVID-19 ICU survivors, and little is known about their long-term outcomes. We evaluated the HRQoL trajectories between 3 months and 1 year after ICU discharge, the factors influencing these trajectories and the presence of clusters of HRQoL profiles in a population of COVID-19 patients who underwent invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Moreover, pathophysiological correlations of residual dyspnea were tested.MethodsWe ...

General anesthesiai nnovations in anesthesia are probably less fre- quent than in other fields, but new techniques to administer old drugs and the research of secure and reliable monitoring devices have animated the debate in the last year. 1, 2Drug association is a common practice, looking for positive effects in terms of efficacy and reduction of total doses.the combination of hypnotics like propofol and analgesics like sufentanil can improve anesthesia induction and offer stable maintenance during ...

M inerva Anestesiologica published several exciting articles focusing on general anesthesia last year. The first was an expert opinion by Battaglini et al. on the use of Positive end expiratory Pressure (PeeP) in thoracic surgery.the authors stressed that PeeP could help minimize atelectrauma, prevent airway and alveolar closure, and improve the ventilation/perfusion ratio during one-lung ventilation. However, it could also increase pulmonary vascular resistance by compressing blood vessels, divert ...

In the last decades there has been a huge increase in people who practice sports requesting an increase of the performance. Consequently, also incidence of acute and chronic pain is highly increased in this population of "healthy" people. Pain represents not only a signal of a lesion occurred during the sportive activity, but also (and almost) an unbalance of posture or an overuse of specific articulations or muscles, that has to be resolved not only with a correct physiotherapeutic approach, but ...
