Abstract Di‐(2‐ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a priority organic pollutant frequently found in municipal sludges. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the effects of sludge on plant uptake of 14 C‐DEHP (carbonyl labeled). Plants grown included three food chain crops, lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.), carrot ( Daucus carota L.), and chile pepper ( Capsicum annuum L.) and tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) Net 14 C concentration in plants grown in soil amended with 14 C‐DEHP‐contaminated sludge ...

Abstract The paucity of low- and middle-elevation paleoecologic records in the Northern Rocky Mountains limits our ability to assess current environmental change in light of past conditions. A 10,500-yr-long vegetation, fire and climate history from Lower Decker Lake in the Sawtooth Range provides information from a new region. Initial forests dominated by pine and Douglas-fir were replaced by open Douglas-fir forest at 8420 cal yr BP, marking the onset of warmer conditions than present. Presence ...

In the Chilean school system, classrooms are stable settings and constitute a closed socialization context. Through multilevel analysis, this article examines the association between classroom composition and students' marijuana consumption. Under the theoretical assumption that social control mechanisms work into social learning peer processes, our results indicate that, as an imposed environment, the classroom may encourage or discourage marijuana use among students. The results suggest that individual ...

Summary Climate refugia, locations where taxa survive periods of regionally adverse climate, are thought to be critical for maintaining biodiversity through the glacial–interglacial climate changes of the Q uaternary. A critical research need is to better integrate and reconcile the three major lines of evidence used to infer the existence of past refugia – fossil records, species distribution models and phylogeographic surveys – in order to characterize the complex spatiotemporal trajectories of species ...

Abstract In northern Idaho ( USA ), more than 100 vascular plant species are disjunct >160 km from their main distribution along the Pacific Northwest coast. It remains unclear whether most species within this interior forest disjunction, including Tsuga mertensiana , survived the last glacial period in a north‐Idaho refugium or whether these species colonized the region via long‐distance dispersal during the Holocene. Sediment cores were extracted from three mid‐ to high‐elevation lakes within T. mertensiana ‐ ...

Darting, a common method of capturing wild primates, poses risks to the individuals that must be appropriately minimized. A recent article in the International Journal of Primatology by Cunningham et al. (International Journal of Primatology, 36(5), 894–915, 2015) presented a literature review of the reporting of darting procedures in primatology and anonymously surveyed primatologists on darting methods and their effects, to report general trends in the field. Abstract Aim Understanding how climate refugia and migration over great distances have facilitated species survival during past climate changes is crucial for evaluating contemporary threats to biodiversity, particularly in the face of dispersal barriers. We address this longstanding question on the refugial origins and post‐glacial development of mesic forests. Location Pacific Northwest, North America. Taxon Mountain hemlock ( Tsuga mertensiana ) and western redcedar ( Thuja plicata ). Methods Range‐wide ...

The coronavirus has spread around the world, causing an ongoing pandemic. After the lockdown and quarantine protocols, an evaluation of the population's current emotional state was made through a web-based survey available in both English and Spanish. The objective was to observe how respondents perceived stress and worry as a result of COVID-19. The survey gathered data across three sections: socio-demographic data, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) by Cohen, and additional queries on current ...

We investigate whether in situ persistence during the last glacial maximum (LGM) or long-distance postglacial migration from south of the ice sheets resulted in the modern-day Alaskan distribution. We report experimental results on the transport of proppant in a scaled planar cell. As a complement to many previous studies, we consider, apart from a proper scaling of the experimental cell and flow rate, a scaling of the perforations through which the fracturing slurry is injected. We also consider a fracture height relatively larger than usual, compatible with thick formations such as Vaca Muerta, Neuquén basin (Argentina). Under these conditions, we find that the flow pattern in the fracture ...

Hoppers are one of the most popular devices implemented to allow precise flow control mechanism when dispensing granulate materials from silos and other containers. Despite its ubiquity in many industrial processes, the effect that hopper geometry has on the flow rate is still poorly understood. In this work, we study the influence of the hopper angle on the main two variables that determine the flow rate: the solid-fraction and the velocities of the particles. To this end, we use a quasi-two-dimensional ...

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a well established technique used to measure displacements in fluids. Proppant transport and placement is a crucial phase in the process of well completion to stimulate production in gas and oil reservoirs. Proppant (a granular material) is injected along fluids during hydraulic stimulation to prop fractures open after hydrocarbon production is initiated. This work presents results on the use of PIV for the study of the transport of proppant in a large laboratory ...

The effect of lye concentration and pasteurization on the fermentation of Spanish-style Manzanilla green olives was investigated. Results showed that a rapid, normal fermentation always occurred when the proper lye was used, and only in the case of an inappropriate alkaline treatment could pasteurization help the growth of lactobacilli. Although pasteurization does not seem to affect color of processed olives, texture tests gave lower values for pasteurized samples than for those obtained from nonpasteurized ...

Abstract U.S. Spanish-English bilinguals intentionally engage in code-switching. Its experimental study is challenging, due to the lack of a meaningful context or turn-taking between speakers. We report on the use of a referential communication task to experimentally elicit code-switching. Data from 10 sessions indicate participants’ willingness to code-switch but that frequency of code-switching is constrained by individual factors. Self-reported code-switching use is correlated with the proportion ...

In recent years, there has been a number of experimental and numerical studies on the transport and settlement of proppant in scaled laboratory fractures that are of interest to understand hydraulic stimulation in hydrocarbon reservoirs. The results from these studies are generally taken with skepticism by the industry. Part of this is due to the perception that results must be very sensitive to the boundary conditions. Small changes in the experimental configuration are expected to lead to very ...

Illegal drug use and trafficking are closely connected to crime. This article estimates the socioeconomic impact of this connection in Chile. Goldstein's tripartite model was applied quantifying drug-crime connections and then using those estimates to measure the socioeconomic impact of drug-related crimes. This was estimated in terms of both the monetary cost of law enforcement, and lost productivity due to incarceration. This socioeconomic impact can be divided into: (a) the direct costs arising ...

Vascularized reconstructive techniques may provide an alternative in the repair of critical bone defects; however, no studies specifically addressing the role of vascularized periosteal flaps in stimulating bone allograft revascularization and osseointegration have been reported. FHP could possibly increase the mechanosensitivity of cervical tissues, which could lead to the development of pain depending on the adaptation capability of the central nervous system. Ewing sarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer affecting children and young adults. The main molecular hallmark of Ewing sarcoma are chromosomal translocations that produce chimeric oncogenic transcription factors, the most frequent of which is the aberrant transcription factor EWSR1–FLI1. Because this is the principal oncogenic driver of Ewing sarcoma, its inactivation should be the best therapeutic strategy to block tumor growth. In this study, we genetically inactivated EWSR1–FLI1 using CRISPR-Cas9 ...
