In this article, a new bidirectional tuned liquid column damper (BTLCD) is proposed for controlling the seismic response of structures. The device acts as two independent and orthogonal tuned liquid column dampers (TLCDs), but due to its configuration, it requires less liquid than two equivalent independent TLCDs. The equations of motion of the system formed by the BTLCD and the primary structure to be controlled are obtained by means of Lagrangian dynamics explicitly considering the non-symetrical ...

During adolescence, peer processes play a significant role in development. Whereas peer relations have been studied extensively in the school context, far less research has examined peer processes that occur within extracurricular and out-of-school time activities. This study used focus groups to explore the role of peer processes in shaping developmental processes and outcomes across four distinct types of out-of-school activities in Santiago, Chile. Across all extracurricular activities, three ...

Here we describe a new clinical corpus rich in nested entities and a series of neural models to identify them. The corpus comprises de-identified referrals from the waiting list in Chilean public hospitals. A subset of 5,000 referrals (58.6% medical and 41.4% dental) was manually annotated with 10 types of entities, six attributes, and pairs of relations with clinical relevance. In total, there are 110,771 annotated tokens. A trained medical doctor or dentist annotated these referrals, and then, ...

Mitochondrion is an accepted molecular target in cancer treatment since it exhibits a higher transmembrane potential in cancer cells, making it susceptible to be targeted by lipophilic-delocalized cations of triphenylphosphonium (TPP+). Thus, we evaluated five TPP+-linked decyl polyhydroxybenzoates as potential cytotoxic agents in several human breast cancer cell lines that differ in estrogen receptor and HER2/neu expression, and in metabolic profile. Results showed that all cell lines tested were ...

We previously demonstrated that alkyl gallates coupled to triphenylphosphine have a selective and efficient antiproliferative effect by inducing mitochondrial uncoupling in vitro due to the increased mitochondrial transmembrane potential of tumor cells. Therefore, in this work, the in vivo antitumor activities of alkyl gallate triphenylphosphonium derivatives (TPP+ C8, TPP+ C10 and TPP+ C12) were evaluated in a syngeneic murine model of breast cancer. We found that TPP+ C10 increased the cytosolic ...

Starch is the dominant reserve polysaccharide accumulated in the seed of grasses (like wheat). It is the most common carbohydrate in the human diet and a material applied to the bioplastics and biofuels industry. Hence, the complete understanding of starch metabolism is critical to design rational strategies to improve its allocation in plant reserve tissues. ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) catalyzes the key (regulated) step in the synthetic starch pathway. The enzyme comprises a small ( ...

Owing to the high penetration of electrical energy from wind energy conversion systems (WECSs), some countries are enforcing stringent grid codes to regulate low-voltage-ride-through (LVRT) operation of WECSs. This study presents a self-tuning resonant control (RC) system which can be used for LVRT control of the grid interface in the presence of symmetrical or asymmetrical faults. Only two RCs are required to fully control the four degrees of freedom of the converter output current. Sequence component ...

Abstract Recently, a novel type of fast cortical oscillatory activity that occurs between 110 and 160 Hz (high‐frequency oscillations ( HFO )) was described. HFO are modulated by the theta rhythm in hippocampus and neocortex during active wakefulness and REM sleep. As theta‐ HFO coupling increases during REM , a role for HFO in memory consolidation has been proposed. However, global properties such as the cortex‐wide topographic distribution and the cortico‐cortical coherence remain unknown. In this study, ...

In recent years, different off-the-shelf solutions for the rapid control prototyping of power electronics converters have been commercialised. The main benefits of those systems are based on a fast and easy-to-use environment due to high-level programming. However, most of those systems are very expensive and are closed software and hardware solutions. In this context, this paper presents the design and implementation of a control platform targeting at the segment in between expensive off-the-shelf ...

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are described as promising non-invasive biomarkers for diagnostics and therapeutics. Human studies have shown that haemolysis occurring during blood collection or due to improper sample processing/storage significantly alters the miRNA content in plasma and serum. Nevertheless, no similar research has been performed in dogs so far. We therefore investigated the effects of different degrees of haemolysis on the levels of selected miRNAs in serum and serum-derived extracellular ...
