The presence of heavy metals in wastewater, such as Ni, Pb, Cd, V, Cr, and Cu, is a serious environmental problem. This kind of inorganic pollutant is not biodegradable for several years, and its harmful effect is cumulative. Recently, semiconductor nanomaterials based on metal oxides have gained interest due to their efficiency in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated water, by inducing photocatalytic ion reduction when they absorb light of the appropriate wavelength. The most commonly ...

Acacia aroma , native plant from San Luis, Argentina, is commonly used as antiseptic and for healing of wounds. The present study was conducted to investigate the in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of hot aqueous extract (HAE) and ethanolic extract (EE) of A. aroma . The cytotoxic activity was assayed by neutral red uptake assay on Vero cell. Cell treatment with a range from 100 to 5000 μ g/mL of HAE and EE showed that 500 μ g/mL and 100 μ g/mL were the maximum noncytotoxic concentrations, respectively. ...

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is defined as pneumonia that occurs after 48 hours of endotracheal intubation and initiation of mechanical ventilation. The aim of this work was to use a micro-costing method to calculate the costs generated in 2017 for the care of patients with VAP at the Hospital Juárez de México. We performed a cross-sectional, retrospective, analytical, and observational study of the databases of the registry of health care-associated infections (HAIs) in 2017, in addition ...

Transanal total mesorectal excision (TME) and the "down-to-up" mobilization concept might be possible alternatives to the standard TME, particularly in cases of narrow pelvis or bulky tumors in obese patients. Our aim was to test the feasibility and safety of transanal TME and to evaluate its impact on short-term functional outcome.Six consecutive patients with histologically proven low/middle rectal adenocarcinoma were prospectively enrolled. All patients underwent laparoscopic anterior resection ...

Abstract The joint effect of the Andes as a geographical barrier and the Quaternary glaciations as promoters of genetic divergence remains virtually unexplored in southern South America. To help fill this knowledge gap, in this study we investigated the demographic history of Centris cineraria, a solitary bee mainly distributed in Patagonia. We used mitochondrial and nuclear markers and performed phylogeographical and dating analyses, adjusted spatio-temporal diffusion and species distribution models, ...

Quaternary climatic changes impacted species' demography and distribution worldwide. Although response to climate change could have been modulated by mutualistic interactions with other species, studies exploring the dynamics of these interactions and their role facilitating species persistence during past climatic variations are scarce. In this work, we attempt to explore the spatial dynamic of Calceolaria polyrhiza and its oil-collecting bee pollinators during the last 120,000 years, identifying ...

Temporary ponds of Uruguay and the invertebrates that inhabit them represent relatively unexplored ecosystems, without clear references in relation to the diversity levels they host. In the present work we report the presence of 216 species and morphospecies of invertebrates and a total estimate of richness between 263 and 373 species, for 18 temporary ponds of Castillos Lagoon Basin, in the department of Rocha, Uruguay. ABSTRACT: In integrated crop-livestock systems, overseeding annual summer pastures over grain crops can reduce forage shortages in autumn without altering grain production. This study evaluated the influence of pearl millet (Pennisetumglaucum L.) and sudangrass (Sorghum Sudanese) overseeded on a soybean (Glycine Max) crop or no-tillage seeding after soybean harvest on productive aspects of pasture. The experimental design was a randomized block with treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (pearl millet ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a major cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. Clinical presentation of hepatitis E mainly occurs as an acute and self-limited disease, though chronic cases are now being commonly reported in immunocompromised individuals. In high-income developed areas and non-endemic regions, HEV is mainly transmitted by the zoonotic route through direct contact with infected animals or by consumption of contaminated meat products. Although pigs and wild boars are the main reservoirs ...

Allelochemical effects were observed when Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) adults were treated with Baccharis salicifolia (Ruiz & Pavon) Pers essential oil. The main biological activities were toxicity and repellence. Namely, mono-decyl chain [1-decylpteridine-2,4(1,3H)-dione] 6a and bis-decyl chain [1,3-didecylpteridine-2,4(1,3H)-dione] 7a conjugates were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution (SN 2) reactions of lumazine with 1-iododecane in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Decyl chain coupling occurred at the N1 site and then the N3 site in a sequential manner, without DMF condensation. Molecular orbital (MO) calculations show a p- ...

ABSTRACT Endocannabinoids (eCB) modulate growth cone dynamics and axonal pathfinding through the stimulation of cannabinoid type-1 receptors (CB1R), the function of which depends on their delivery and precise presentation at the growth cone surface. However, the mechanism involved in the axonal transport of CB1R and its transport role in eCB signaling remains elusive. As mutations in the kinesin-1 molecular motor have been identified in patients with abnormal cortical development and impaired white ...
