We consider the techniques to distinguish normal star forming (NSF) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosts using optical spectra. The observational data base is a set of 20000 galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, for which we have determined the emission line intensities after subtracting the stellar continuum obtained from spectral synthesis. Our analysis is based on photoionization models computed using the stellar ionizing radiation predicted by Starburst 99 and, for the ...

Summary The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of height of healing caps and the use of soft liner materials on the stress distribution in peri‐implant bone during masticatory function in conventional complete dentures during the healing period by using finite element analysis. Three‐dimensional models of a severely resorbed mandible with two recently placed implants in the anterior region were created and divided into the following situations: (i) submerged implants, (ii) healing ...

The aim of this study was to assess the stress/strain in dental implant/abutments with alternative materials, in implants with different microgeometry, through finite element analysis (FEA). Three-dimensional models were created to simulate the clinical situation of replacement of a maxillary central incisor with implants, in a type III bone, with a provisional single crown, loaded with 100 N in a perpendicular direction. The FEA parameters studied were: implant materials—titanium, porous titanium, ...

In biofloc technology (BFT) rearing systems, nitrogen compounds, specially ammonia and nitrite, have to be controlled by microbial pathways, mainly through the activity of heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic bacteria. The objective of this work was to assess different water preparation strategies (heterotrophic, chemoautotrophic and mature) in BFT system for nursery of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). A 35-day study was conducted with post-larvae shrimp (0.08 g) stocked in twelve 300 L tanks ...

The classification of galaxies as star forming or active is generally done in the ([O III]/Hbeta, [N II]/Halpha) plane. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has revealed that, in this plane, the distribution of galaxies looks like the two wings of a seagull. Galaxies in the right wing are referred to as Seyfert/LINERs, leading to the idea that non-stellar activity in galaxies is a very common phenomenon. Here, we argue that a large fraction of the systems in the right wing could actually be galaxies ...

Throughout the plant development, the physiological processes of growth, as well as the handling of water and fertilizers represent sources of variation in the spectral response of the crops. Thus, in the context of precision agriculture, information on the phenological stage of cultivation can be decisive in accurately estimating agronomic variables through the use of aerial images obtained by RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) platforms. Therefore, the aim of this study was: i) to investigate ...

Achieving ambitious global restoration commitments is a huge challenge. The Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact, created in 2009 as a movement to restore 15 Mha of degraded/deforested lands by 2050, pledged 1 Mha towards the 2020 Bonn Challenge. We documented the restoration of an estimated 673,510–740,555 ha of native forests from 2011 to 2015 in the Atlantic Forest, and expect that a total of 1.35–1.48 Mha will be under recovery by 2020. The Pact is one of the first Brazilian restoration initiatives ...

Recurrence of COVID-19 in recovered patients has been increasingly reported. However, the immune mechanisms behind the recurrence have not been thoroughly investigated. The presence of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) in recurrence/reinfection cases suggests that other types of immune response are involved in protection against recurrence. Abstract The potential for increasing the productivity in cow-calf operation has gained wide acceptance in the last decade among Brazilian farms. Our objectives were to assess the impacts of providing supplementation to pregnant beef cows during the dry grazing period on cow and calf performance. During a 2-yr period, Tabapuã cows (n = 36) were blocked by parity and body weight (BW), and randomly assigned to pastures at the beginning of the rainy season. Brachiaria pastures were assigned to receive ...

Genetic variability in phytopathogens is one of the main problems encountered for effective plant disease control. This fact may be related to the presence of transposable elements (TEs), but little is known about their role in host genomes. Here, we performed the most comprehensive analysis of insertion sequences (ISs) and transposons (Tns) in the genomes of the most important bacterial plant pathogens. A total of 35 692 ISs and 71 transposons were identified in 270 complete genomes. The level of ...
