Assuming that skimming flow occurs when the jet leaving a step has a slope equal to that of the stepped spillway when it impinges on the pool behind it on the next step, an equation has been developed to predict the incipient value of \Iy\dc/\ih, where \iy\dc = critical depth and \ih = step height. This equation was found to agree well with most of the experimental observations for \ih/\il greater than about 1.0, where \il = step length. For \ih/\il = 1.7, the incipient value of \iy\dc/\ih = 0.24, whereas for values ...

Two sets of models of stepped spillways of slope 1 upon 0.6 with the same crest-shape and with a range of step sizes (0.25–2.0 m on the 1:10 scale and 0.5–2.0 m on the 1:20 scale models) were built and studied. In the range of prototype unit flows considered (0.8–3.8 m2/s on the 1:10 scale models and 1.8–21.7 m2/s on the 1:20 models), the residual specific energy is independent of these step sizes, at positions where measurements were made on the spillways (from 30 m below the crest) once fully aerated ...

In the last decades, critical pedagogy and critical literacy in the field of Applied Linguistics have been strong theories to review, rethink and re-signify linguistic education, in particular, in the field of English teaching in Brazil, that for many years has remained hostage of the “banking education model” (“depositing of information” by teachers into their students) criticized by Paulo Freire in the 70’s when he dismissed the hypothesis of teaching by rote and shaped linguistic education as a ...

In Mato Grosso, Brazil, the authors found what may be the largest marsh deer population in South America, numbering possibly as many as 7000 animals. But it is seriously threatened, following three bad breeding seasons, 1975–77, attributable, they suspect, to disease, perhaps brucellosis which is common in the cattle of the area. Heavy flooding has also taken a toll. The marsh deer is already listed in the Red Data Book as a threatened species.

We show that pay is higher for CEOs with general managerial skills gathered during lifetime work experience. We use CEOs’ résumés of S&P 1,500 firms from 1993 through 2007 to construct an index of general skills that are transferable across firms and industries. We estimate an annual pay premium for generalist CEOs—those with an index value above the median—of 19% relative to specialist CEOs, which represents nearly a million dollars per year. This relation is robust to the inclusion of firm- and ...

We study the transmission of bank distress to nonfinancial firms from 34 countries during the 2007-2009 financial crisis using systemic and bank-specific shocks. We find that bank distress is associated with equity valuation losses and investment cuts to borrower firms with the strongest lending relationships with banks. The losses are not offset by borrowers’ access to public debt markets and are concentrated in firms with the greatest information asymmetry problems and with the weakest financial ...

This survey examines the vibrant academic literature on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing. While there is no consensus on the exact list of ESG issues, responsible investors increasingly assess stocks in their portfolios based on nonfinancial data on environmental impact (e.g., carbon emissions), social impact (e.g., employee satisfaction), and governance attributes (e.g., board structure). The objective is to reduce exposure to investments that pose greater ESG risks or to influence ...

We examine the relation between international institutional ownership and payout policy using a comprehensive data set of equity holdings from 37 countries over the years 2000-2007. We find that foreign institutional ownership is negatively associated with the likelihood that a firm pays dividends and the size of dividend payments. The greater the tax disadvantage of dividends to international investors, and the higher are transaction costs related to repatriating and reinvesting dividends, the ...

We examine whether institutional investors affect corporate governance by analyzing portfolio holdings of institutions in companies from 23 countries during the period 2003-2008. We find that firm-level governance is positively associated with international institutional investment. Changes in institutional ownership over time positively affect subsequent changes in firm-level governance, but the opposite is not true. Foreign institutions and institutions from countries with strong shareholder protection ...

Banks play a role in the corporate governance of firms as well as acting as debt financiers around the world. Universal banks can have control over borrowing firms by representation on the board of directors or by holding shares through direct stakes or institutional holdings. We investigate the effects of these bank-firm governance links on the global syndicated loan market. We find that banks are more likely to act as lead arrangers, charge higher interest rate spreads and face less credit risk ...

We study the role of institutional investors in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A). We find that foreign institutional ownership is positively associated with the intensity of cross-border M&A activity worldwide. Foreign institutional ownership increases the probability that a merger deal is cross-border, successful, and the bidder takes full control of the target firm. This relation is stronger in countries with weaker legal institutions and in less developed markets suggesting some substitutability ...

This paper investigates how the investment horizon of a firm's institutional shareholders impacts the market for corporate control. We find that target firms with short-term shareholders are more likely to receive an acquisition bid but get lower premiums. This effect is robust and economically significant: Targets whose shareholders hold their stocks for less four months, one standard deviation away from the average holding period of 15 months, exhibit a lower premium by 3%. In addition, we find ...

We investigate whether mutual fund families strategically allocate performance across their member funds favoring those more likely to generate higher fee income or future inflows. We find evidence of strategic cross-fund subsidization of 'high family value' funds (i.e. high fees or high past performers) at the expense of 'low value' funds in the order of 6 to 28 basis points of extra net-of-style performance per month, depending on the criteria. This overperformance is above the one that would exist ...

It looks at the results of privatization in Brazil for a broad range of economic variables to answer the question: Has the widespread popular discontent with the program been ...

In response to different stress stimuli, cells transiently form stress granules (SGs) in order to protect themselves and re-establish homeostasis. Besides these important cellular functions, SGs are now being implicated in different human diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. SGs are ribonucleoprotein granules, constituted by a variety of different types of proteins, RNAs, factors involved in translation and signaling molecules, being capable of regulating mRNA translation to ...

This paper challenges the widely accepted stylized fact that CEOs in the United States are paid significantly more than their foreign counterparts. Using CEO pay data across 14 countries with mandated pay disclosures, we show that the US pay premium is economically modest and primarily reflects the performance-based pay demanded by institutional shareholders and independent boards. Indeed, we find no significant difference in either level of CEO pay or the use of equity-based pay between US and ...
