Amorphous silicon electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) are used to perform routine quality control (QC) checks on the multileaf collimators (MLCs) at this centre. Presently, these checks are performed at gantry angle 0° and are considered to be valid for all other angles. Since therapeutic procedures regularly require the delivery of MLC-defined fields to the patient at a wide range of gantry angles, the accuracy of the QC checks at other gantry angles has been investigated. When the gantry is ...

Metamaterials exhibit properties beyond those exhibited by conventional materials in conventional scenarios. These have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally at length. In many cases the underpinning physical understanding of metamaterials has greatly preceded our ability to manufacture constituent structures. However, the development of additive manufacturing techniques gives new possibilities for the fabrication of complex metamaterial structures, many of which cannot be realised ...

Matt Clarke, B. Denby, Damian Schofield,

This paper describes the basic principles of computerised knowledge based decision support systems and shows how they can be applied to aid in certain aspects of the design and planning of surface mining operations. The paper concentrates on two examples concerning the use of such tools in equipment selection for hydraulic excavators and draglines. These examples illustrate the importance of identifying and installing the pertinent knowledge together with the application of multiple software systems ...

Group C Streptococcus (GCS) is a rare cause of bacteremia in humans. It is mostly associated with zoonological infections. Although GCS can be part of the normal oral, skin, and genitourinary fora, an infection with this pathogen can be highly virulent, causing rapid, disseminating disease. With a mortality of about 25%, the poor prognosis is linked to the severity of illness and the high level of virulence of the organism. Only a few cases of GCS meningitis have been reported. We present the first ...

Electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) have been shown to be suitable for multileaf collimator (MLC) leaf positioning quality control (QC). In our centre, a continuous dataset is available of 2 years of film measurements followed by 3 years of EPID measurements on five MLC-equipped linear accelerators of identical head design. The aim of this work was to analyse this unique dataset in order to determine the relative precision of film and EPID for MLC leaf positioning measurements and to determine ...

Objective: To demonstrate a significant correlation between the Doppler waveform and blood flow volume in the assessment of valve efficiency. In particular the objective was to ratify use of the ‘area index’ of the wave form. Design: Pearson's correlation and zero line assessment were used. Using a phantom, multiple tests were performed so that a wide spectrum of flow volumes could be compared with corresponding Doppler waves. Setting: Private diagnostic imaging clinic with vascular surgical association. ...

Executing learned motor behaviors often requires the transformation of sensory cues into patterns of motor commands that generate appropriately timed actions. The cerebellum and thalamus are two key areas involved in shaping cortical output and movement, but the contribution of a cerebellar-thalamocortical pathway to voluntary movement initiation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated how an auditory "go cue" transforms thalamocortical activity patterns and how these changes relate to movement ...

Motor cortex generates descending output necessary for executing a wide range of limb movements. Although movement-related activity has been described throughout motor cortex, the spatiotemporal organization of movement-specific signaling in deep layers remains largely unknown. Here we record layer 5B population dynamics in the caudal forelimb area of motor cortex while mice perform a forelimb push/pull task and find that most neurons show movement-invariant responses, with a minority displaying ...

AbstractPurpose. The different strategies employed by tennis players as a result of changes in friction properties of the playing surface are likely to influence injury incidence. Lower risk of injuries on surfaces that allow sliding has been reported. The aim of the present study was to characterise in-shoe pressure during tennis specific movements performed on a hard court and artificial clay in two surface-specific shoes.Methods. Two tennis surfaces were compared: artificial clay and cushioned ...

The traction developed at the shoe–surface interface can have a significant influence on a player’s injury risk and performance in tennis. The purpose of this study was to investigate shoe–surface traction on a dry acrylic hard court and two artificial clay court tennis surfaces in dry and wet conditions. A laboratory-based mechanical test rig was developed to measure the traction force developed at the shoe–surface interface. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between ...

Crystalline cellulose was anaerobically degraded using a leachate inoculum derived from simulated municipal solid waste. Bicinchoninic Acid (BCA) protein assays were used to measure the distribution of biomass during cellulose degradation, including the planktonic and sessile biomass fractions. A comparison of sessile and planktonic microbial growth indicated that the microbial growth was dominated by the planktonic fraction with the biofilms accounting for approximately 25% of the population.
