Our primary objective was to evaluate gene expression changes in Arabidopsis thaliana in response to parabolic flight as part of a comprehensive approach to the molecular biology of spaceflight-related adaptations. In addition, we wished to establish parabolic flight as a tractable operations platform for molecular biology studies. In a succession of experiments on NASA's KC-135 and C-9 parabolic aircraft, Arabidopsis plants were presented with replicated exposure to parabolic flight. Transcriptome ...

The addition of novel side chains at the 5-position of uracil is an effective means to increase chemical diversity of aptamers and hence the success rate for discovery of high-affinity ligands to protein targets. Such modifications also increase nuclease resistance, which is useful in a range of applications, especially for therapeutics. In this study, we assess the impact of these side chains on plasma pharmacokinetics of modified aptamers conjugated to a 40 kDa polyethylene glycol. We show that ...

The management of the unstable Down syndrome hip is challenging, and there is controversy about the anatomic factors that may contribute to the instability. It has been our observation that children with Down syndrome often have a deficient posterior acetabular wall. This is different from other congenital acetabular dysplasia where the anatomic deficiency is typically anterolateral. These observations suggest that the acetabulum in Down syndrome hip dysplasia may be relatively retroverted. The ...

Abstract Fever in rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 50 μg/kg) and body temperature was measured by biotelemetry. Inhibitors of cytochrome P-450, SKF-525A and clotrimazole, injected peripherally (15 mg/kg) or into the brain (SKF-525A; 5 μg/rat) augmented fever. SKF-525A given intraperitoneally doubled the increase of the 3 h post-LPS plasma prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) level from 169±37 pg/ml in control/LPS to 343±45 pg/ml in SKF-525A/LPS rats. We consider frames in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space H n where frames are exactly the spanning sets of the vector space. The diagram vector of a vector in R 2 was previously defined using polar coordinates and was used to characterize tight frames in R 2 in a geometric fashion.Reformulating the definition of a diagram vector in R 2 we provide a natural extension of this notion to R n and C n .Using the diagram vectors we give a characterization of tight frames in R n or C n .Further we provide ...

There are many outstanding questions about how to control the global COVID-19 pandemic. The information void has been especially stark in the World Health Organization Africa Region, which has low per capita reported cases, low testing rates, low access to therapeutic drugs, and has the longest wait for vaccines. As with all disease, the central challenge in responding to COVID-19 is that it requires integrating complex health systems that incorporate prevention, testing, front line health care, ...

BACKGROUND: Understanding surgical site infection (SSI) risk factors after breast operation is essential to develop infection-prevention strategies and improve surgical outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective case-control study with subjects selected from a cohort of mastectomy, breast reconstruction, and reduction surgical patients between January 1998 and June 2002 at a university-affiliated hospital. SSI cases within 1 year after operation were identified using ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes ...

Inhibitors of cyclooxygenases prevent fever. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that selective and dual inhibitors of the other enzyme systems of arachidonic acid oxygenation (i.e., lipoxygenase and epoxygenase) affect the time course or magnitude of fever in mice. Swiss Webster mice kept at 30°C ambient temperature were implanted with biotelemeters to monitor body temperature. Fever was induced by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide at doses from 10 μg/kg to 2.5 mg/ ...

Mayfield estimates of daily survival are the most commonly available nest survival estimates in the ecological and ornithological literature. However, application of the Mayfield technique requires assumptions about the distributions of hatching and fledging events that are violated in most empirical data sets. We unified several variants of the Mayfield model using a discrete Markov chain formulation and used this formulation to study the effects of assumptions about transition probabilities under ...

It has long been assumed that the last glacier expansion in the Scottish Highlands, the Loch Lomond Readvance (LLR), resulted from a cold reversal that was broadly coeval with the ‘Younger Dryas’ episode. This view has recently been challenged, with the suggestion that glacier ice had disappeared from Rannoch Moor, one of the main ice accumulation centres in the SW Scottish Highlands, by as early as 12.5 ka, i.e. within the first half of the ‘Younger Dryas’. Here we present new radiocarbon, tephrostratigraphical ...

Abstract Coral bleaching is the single largest global threat to coral reefs worldwide. Integrating the diverse body of work on coral bleaching is critical to understanding and combating this global problem. Yet investigating the drivers, patterns, and processes of coral bleaching poses a major challenge. A recent review of published experiments revealed a wide range of experimental variables used across studies. Such a wide range of approaches enhances discovery, but without full transparency in ...
