The three sub-species of Trypanosoma brucei are important pathogens of sub-Saharan Africa. T. b. brucei is unable to infect humans due to sensitivity to trypanosome lytic factors (TLF) 1 and 2 found in human serum. T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense are able to resist lysis by TLF. There are two distinct sub-groups of T. b. gambiense that differ genetically and by human serum resistance phenotypes. Group 1 T. b. gambiense have an invariant phenotype whereas group 2 show variable resistance. Previous ...

PLHIV have higher rates of smoking and lower motivation to quit smoking; thus to impact smoking rates, cessation interventions need to be acceptable to a wider range of PLHIV smokers as well as feasible to implement in a busy clinical setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and effects of a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment (SBIRT) model in an HIV/AIDS clinic among a sample of PLHIV. PLHIV smokers (N = 40) were randomized at baseline, ...

Henry Ellis,

Among the Manuscripts which were some time ago purchased by Government of the Representatives of Mr. Francis Hargrave, and which are now deposited in the British Museum, I have laid my hand upon the Transcript of an Order made by Cardinal Wolsey, as Lord Chancellor, for the regulation of the Household Expences and general Management of the Affairs of the young Earl of Oxford, then a minor. In the 15th year of King Henry the 8th. A.D. 1524.

In the third volume of the Archaeologia I find a partial illustration of a passage in the History of Ingulphus. Speaking of the Customs introduced into this country after the Norman conquest, the historian says, “Conferebantur etiam primo multa prædia nudo verbo, absque scripto vel charta, tantum cum domini gladio, vel galea, vel corñu, vel cratera: et plurima tenementa cum calcari, cum strigili, cum arcu; et nonnulla cum sagitta. Aniline and substituted anilines have been found to react, in acid solution, with αβ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (or with substances which can be converted into αβ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by acid) to give β-arylaminoaldehydes or ketones (IV, VIII, X), or in some cases the anil of a β-arylaminoaldehyde. These adducts have been cyclized, sometimes in good yield, to the corresponding quinolines: and the evidence indicates that compounds of these types must be intermediates m the Skraup, the ...

It is estimated that up to one-third of persons with known human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the United States are not engaged in care. We evaluated factors associated with patients' failure to establish outpatient HIV care at our clinic and found that females, racial minorities, and patients lacking private health insurance were more likely to be "no shows." At the clinic level, longer waiting time from the call to schedule a new patient visit to the appointment date was associated ...

H. Rutherford Turnbull, Brennan L. Wilcox, Matthew J. Stowe, Carolyn Raper, Laura Penny Hedges,

This article examines precedents that justify Congress in creating a preference for positive behavioral interventions, strategies, and supports over other interventions in the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The authors concluded that the IDEA 1997 provisions are warranted by several well-established precedents based in constitutional law, in the right to treatment and the right to education cases, in moral philosophy, and in democratic-government philosophy.

Summary: Crosses were made between strains of Dictyostelium discoideum involving two drug resistance markers and the mating-type locus. Over 6000 progeny from 263 individual germinated macrocysts from four single-factor crosses, five two-factor crosses and one three-factor cross were characterized. In most cases the progeny from a single macrocyst were of one genotype, although in the population of macrocysts from any two-factor cross all possible parental and recombinant genotypes were recovered. ...

Henry Ellis,

I beg to transmit to the Society of Antiquaries, through your hands, the copy of a document of some curiosity. While searching among the Digby Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, in the autumn of last year, I discovered an enumeration and explanation of the Devices borne as Badges of Cognizance by Richard Duke of York, the father of King Edward the fourth, written in a contemporary hand, evidently in the Duke's lifetime.

H. J. Hamilton,

Sir, I have here ventured to send you some remarks on the methods that have been commonly used in treating of those engines that are called the mechanic powers: and also an account of the principles on which, I think, we may best explain their nature and manner of acting.
