BACKGROUND/AIMS: The physical properties of the stratum corneum (SC) change with its water content, which is regulated by the presence of water solutes (natural moisturizing factors) and lipids in the SC, and are considered to be responsible for the induction of desquamation, skin surface roughness, and fine wrinkles. Recently a new type of tactile sensor developed for evaluating the physical properties of objects has been introduced as a simple, non-invasive method to evaluate them; because the data ...

Simultaneous measurements of in situ Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry have been carried out for thin film electrodes of LixCoO2 in propylene carbonate containing 1 M LiClO4. The Raman lines of 485 and 587 cm−1 observed at LixCoO2 electrodes were attributed to the A1g and Eg modes of the LiCoO2, respectively. The Raman intensity of two lines changed drastically during the insertion/extraction of lithium ions. This effect can be explained by the reduction of the optical skin depth due to ...

The giant magnetoresistance effect has been investigated for amorphous-CoFeB/Cu/Co sandwiches with and without exchange-bias layers. A maximum magnetoresistance ratio of 5.4% was obtained in the CoFeB/Cu/Co sandwich at room temperature, where most of the MR change occurred within a magnetic field change of 280 A/m (3.5 Oe). The sandwich with NiO exchange-bias layer showed spin valve behavior with a MR ratio of 2.5%.

Computer-analyzed EEG data and mental functions of the healthy aged (28 survivors and 20 nonsurvivors) were followed for nine years in a study of their relationship with age and longevity. The study revealed that decrease in fast waves occurred from early senescence. The slowing of EEG, the increase in theta waves, and the decrease in alpha frequency became obvious in late senescence, after the late 70s or beyond 80 years. The amount of alpha waves was maintained until the early 80s. The decline ...

The sites of action of ketamine (CI-581; 2-(0-chlorophenyl)-2-methylamino cyclohexamine HCl) were determined in the central nervous system using electrophysiological techniques in both acute and chronic cat experiments. It was demonstrated in chronic preparations that the cataleptic anesthetic state induced by ketamine is accompanied by an alternating pattern of hypersynchronous delta wave bursts and low voltage, fast wave activity in the neocortex and thalamus. The delta wave bursts had a distribution ...

The relationship between the computerized EEG data and the mental function was studied in 73 subjects aged 60 and over in a home for the aged. The mental function was examined by Hasegawa Test (HT) (simplified dementia rating scale) and Bender Gestalt Test (BGT), and the degree of the mental deterioration was classified as normal, sub-normal, pre-dementia, dementia of HT, and as (-), (+), (++), (+++) of BGT. The EEG records were analyzed quantitatively at resting state with eye-closed and also at eye-opened state. EEG variables ...

A daily dose of 90 mg of idebenone was given to nine patients with cerebrovascular disorders to investigate its effects on clinical symptoms and electroencephalograms (EEG). Changes in EEG before and after the administration were compared quantitatively by computer analysis using the wave-form recognition method. Significant increase in frequency in the alpha band (O1) and trends of increased appearance of beta waves, decreased appearance of alpha 1 bands, and lowered amplitude in the alpha 1 and ...

SUMMARY Bitemporal and bifrontal electroshock (AC.50 cps., threshold voltage, 2 sec.) was applied to twenty five curarized cats, and the pattern of the induced seizure discharge and their regional correlation were studied in the neo‐, paleo‐ (amygdala), archicortex (hippocampus) and subcortical structures. No essential difference of the seizure activity was seen between both electroshock procedures. The seizure activity has tendency to originate in the neocortex (especially in the sensorimotor cortex), ...

The combustion characteristics of single CWM and COM droplets on a hot surface were investigated. The surrounding temperature was carefully adjusted to the temperature of the hot surface. The vaporization and combustion behavior of a single slurry droplet under a uniform temperature condition could then be observed. The ignition delay time of the COM droplet was shorter than that of the CWM droplets. When the initial diameter of the droplet decreased, the total burning time decreased proportionately ...

Summary Photic stimulation from 0.5 to 20cps flickers was given on 7 cases of portal‐systemic encephalopathy. The triphasic waves were increased by the stimulation (mostly appearing synchronously with 2.0–3.5 cps of flicker) in all cases at least more than once in repeated EEG examinations. Bemegride activation was performed on three cases who had theta and alpha background activity with very poor delta waves. The triphasic waves increased in number remarkably in two cases and poorly in one. Based ...

We hope you are doing well. We want to share our experiences as radiography students amid the COVID-19 pandemic in central South Africa. Like infants born during the pandemic, we are also referred to as COVID-Babies because the COVID-19 pandemic commenced in our first year as radiography students. We were on campus for only two months when the South African national alert level 5 lockdown started at midnight on 26 March 2020. Our government instructed us to return home, which for most of us was ...
