Currently, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the screening of hepatic nodules in patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure. The objectives of this study are to evaluate in this population the frequency of hepatic nodules at ultrasound (US), CT, and MRI; to measure liver stiffness using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography; and to investigate predictive factors for hepatic nodules. In this cross-sectional study, 49 patients who underwent the Fontan procedure were ...

The accuracy of three traditional formulas to calculate log volumes (Smalian, Huber, and Newton) and three recent methods (cubic splines, centroid sampling, and overlapping bolts) were compared and tested against volumes determined by the water-displacement technique (xylometer). Fifty-two felled trees were measured in a Pinus elliottii Engelm. plantation. The accuracy of these six procedures was analyzed considering total and merchantable outside bark volumes with 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-m log lengths. ...

Introduction: Neuroimaging studies demonstrate that not only the lesions of malformations of cortical development (MCD) but also the normal-appearing parenchyma (NAP) present metabolic impairments, as revealed with 1H-MRS. We have previously detected biochemical disturbances in MCD lesions with phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS). Our hypothesis is that pH abnormalities extend beyond the visible lesions. Methods: Three-dimensional 31P-MRS at 3.0 T was performed in 37 patients with ...

An isolated population of tapaculos attributed to Scytalopus speluncae has been known from the mountains of southeastern Bahia state, Brazil, since the early 1990s, and a second isolated population was discovered in 1999. Morphological and bioacoustic analyses of 11 specimens and several tape recordings indicated that these populations represent a new species, in agreement with a previous molecular phylogenetic study. This species is unambiguously distinguished from its closest relatives by 4 suites ...

Forest census allows getting precise data for logging planning and elaboration of the forest management plan. Species identification blunders carry inadequate forest management plans and high risks inside forest concessions. Hence, an identification protocol prevents the exploitation of non-commercial or endangered timber species. The current Peruvian legislation allows the incorporation of non-technical experts, called "materos", during the identification. Materos use common names given by the folklore ...

When tested in solar cells, ruthenium polypyridinic dyes with extended π systems show an enhanced light-harvesting capacity that is not necessarily reflected by a high (collected electrons)/(absorbed photons) ratio. Provided that metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands, MLCT, are more effective, due to their directionality, than intraligand (IL) π-π* bands for the electron injection process in the solar cell, it seems important to explore and clarify the nature of the absorption bands present in these ...

This article proposes a coordinated and decentralized control structure for a dc microgrid (MG) powered by fuel cells (FCs) and energy storage units (ESUs). With the employment of ESUs in the dc MG, the balancing among their states of charge (SoCs) increases their lifetimes and improves the dc MG reliability. Assuming the FC as the main source, fast transients of load on the dc link can damage its membrane. In this context, the FC and ESUs show a complementary behavior during the transitory, while the ...

The early establishment and persistence of landholding inequality is linked to poor long-run development outcomes. One crucial channel runs through human capital: large landowners historically underinvested in public goods such as schools, restricted workers and their children from to attending school, and extracted surplus from laborers that could have been invested in human capital. By equalizing landholdings, land redistribution should facilitate human capital accumulation. Using original data ...

Background The relationship between diabetes and oxidative stress has been previously reported. Exercise represents a useful non-pharmacological strategy for the treatment in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) patients, but high intensity exercise can induce a transient inflammatory state and increase oxidative stress. Nutritional strategies that may contribute to the reduction of oxidative stress induced by acute exercise are necessary. The aim of this study was to examine if n-3 PUFA supplementation intervention ...

Unobserved heterogeneity is modeled by allowing the parameters to vary randomly over individuals according to a continuous, discrete, or discrete-continuous mixture distribution, which must be chosen a priori by the researcher. In particular, the models supported by gmnl are the multinomial or conditional logit, ...

Wnt/β-catenin signaling, a highly conserved pathway through evolution, regulates key cellular functions including proliferation, differentiation, migration, genetic stability, apoptosis, and stem cell renewal. The Wnt pathway mediates biological processes by a canonical or noncanonical pathway, depending on the involvement of β-catenin in signal transduction. β-catenin is a core component of the cadherin protein complex, whose stabilization is essential for the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. ...

Effects of plantation forestry on biodiversity are controversially discussed in literature. While some authors stress positive effects, others tend to attribute a largely negative influence to plantations. One important factor steering the influence on biodiversity are management practices. A second important factor is the environmental matrix. Chile offers the option to analyse both factors jointly. The coastal range of central Chile has experienced rapid and widespread replacement of native Nothofagus ...
