Abstract Politics and science have become increasingly intertwined. Salient scientific issues, such as climate change, evolution, and stem-cell research, become politicized, pitting partisans against one another. This creates a challenge of how to effectively communicate on such issues. Recent work emphasizes the need for tailored messages to specific groups. Here, we focus on whether generalized messages also can matter. We do so in the context of a highly polarized issue: extreme COVID-19 vaccine ...

We have determined the temperature profile in magnetic nanocontacts under applied current densities typical of spin-torque oscillators (∼10(8) A/cm2). The study combines experimental measurements of the electrical and magnetic properties of the nanocontacts and full three-dimensional simulations of the heat and current flow in these systems. It is found that the quadratic current-induced increase of the resistance due to Joule heating is independent of the applied temperature from 6 to 300 K. In terms ...

Background A 6-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of combined therapy with olanzapine and either valproate or lithium compared with valproate or lithium alone in treating acute manic or mixed bipolar episodes. Methods The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of olanzapine (5-20 mg/d) vs placebo when added to ongoing mood-stabilizer therapy as measured by reductions in Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) scores. We present an experimental study of the nucleation rate associated with current-driven vortex oscillations in magnetic nanocontacts. We find that the nucleation and subsequent steady-state oscillation of a vortex can be initiated using current pulses as short as a few nanoseconds, yielding instant on oscillator capability. The nucleation rate is governed by an Arrhenius law, with an exponential dependence on the applied current magnitude. The mechanism for the vortex nucleation is discussed and ...

Abstract Double-resonance Raman scattering is a sensitive probe to study the electron-phonon scattering pathways in crystals. For semiconducting two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides, the double-resonance Raman process involves different valleys and phonons in the Brillouin zone, and it has not yet been fully understood. Here we present a multiple energy excitation Raman study in conjunction with density functional theory calculations that unveil the double-resonance Raman scattering ...

The heterogeneity of senescent cells (SnCs) and senescence-associated secretory phenotype are vast, yet ill characterized. The mechanism of hypertrophic scar reduction using silicone gel sheeting remains elusive. We hypothesize that the decrease in scar formation is due to occlusion and homeostasis of the barrier layer. Using an established model of hypertrophic scarring, rabbits were divided into four groups and scars were tape-stripped or occluded with Kelocote, Cavilon, or Indermil, with each rabbit serving as its own internal control. All wounds were harvested on day 28 and examined histologically to measure the ...

We propose a write scheme for perpendicular spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random-access memory that significantly reduces the required tunnel current density and write energy. A sub-nanosecond in-plane polarized spin current pulse is generated using the spin-Hall effect, disturbing the stable magnetic state. Subsequent switching using out-of-plane polarized spin current becomes highly efficient. Through evaluation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we quantitatively assess the viability ...

The role of a HfO 2 or ZrO 2 interlayer as a thermal bridge between a $\beta $ -Ga 2 O 3 channel and a sapphire substrate was investigated using a $\beta $ -Ga 2 O 3 nano-membrane FET as a test vehicle. A 35% less channel temperature increase was observed when a thin HfO 2 or ZrO 2 interlayer was inserted between the $\beta $ -Ga 2 O 3 channel and the sapphire substrate compared to devices without interlayers. We study vortex spin torque oscillators based on magnetic point contacts that operate in zero applied magnetic field. Static and dynamic vortex modes are shown to exist and have distinct electrical signatures. For the oscillatory mode, a spectrally pure slightly asymmetric voltage waveform is observed. It is subject to phase noise as sole fluctuations. The waveforms observed indicate that the vortex orbits outside the point contact region, with a pinned layer magnetization that is static but spatially ...

This article probes the denatured state ensemble of ribonuclease Sa (RNase Sa) using fluorescence. To interpret the results obtained with RNase Sa, it is essential that we gain a better understanding of the fluorescence properties of tryptophan (Trp) in peptides. We describe studies of N-acetyl-L-tryptophanamide (NATA), a tripeptide: AWA, and six pentapeptides: AAWAA, WVSGT, GYWHE, HEWTV, EAWQE, and DYWTG. The latter five peptides have the same sequence as those surrounding the Trp residues studied ...

Abstract Characterizing the denatured state ensemble is crucial to understanding protein stability and the mechanism of protein folding. The aim of this research was to see if fluorescence could be used to gain new information on the denatured state ensemble. Ribonuclease Sa (RNase Sa) contains no Trp residues. We made five variants of RNase Sa by adding Trp residues at locations where they are found in other members of the microbial ribonuclease family. To better understand the protein denatured state, ...

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a method of generating a foam-like conformal carbon layer of porous graphene on many types of carbon-based surfaces. This electrically conductive material has been shown to be useful in many applications (e.g., environmental technology) and exhibits low fouling and antimicrobial surfaces. Moreover, polymers and concrete composite materials have been made. Since LIG is formed using common engraving or cutting lasers, LIG images on paper products was recently termed "graphene ...
