Seventy-one samples of Mexican foodstuffs (cereal products and pulses) of both rural and urban origin were analyzed for their nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) content. Analyses of the constituent monosaccharides in the NSP were also undertaken. Rural and urban data for the same products were obtained when their likely composition depended on local preparation rather than on factory processing. Pulses, e.g., beans, broadbeans, chickpeas, and lentils, contained higher amounts of total NSP than cereals, ...

Gram-stain-positive, partially acid-fast, non-spore-forming, anaerobic, catalase-positive, pleomorphic bacteria were isolated from human abscesses. Strains X1036T, X1698 and NML 120705, were recovered from a spinal abscess, a peritoneal abscess and a breast abscess respectively. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strains shared 100 % similarity, and the nearest phylogenetic neighbour was Dietzia timorensis DSM 45568T (95%). Chemotaxonomic characteristics of the strains ...

Summary Conversion of nongrain biomass into liquid fuel is a sustainable approach to energy demands as global population increases. Previously, we showed that iron can act as a catalyst to enhance the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass for biofuel production. However, direct addition of iron catalysts to biomass pretreatment is diffusion‐limited, would increase the cost and complexity of biorefinery unit operations and may have deleterious environmental impacts. Here, we show a new strategy ...

Background Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is a three-dimensional mammography technique with the potential to improve accuracy by improving differentiation between malignant and non-malignant lesions. Objectives The objectives of the study were to compare the diagnostic accuracy of DBT in conjunction with two-dimensional (2D) mammography or synthetic 2D mammography, against standard 2D mammography and to determine if DBT improves the accuracy of detection of different types of lesions. Study population ...

Pediatric autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is relatively common and has a characteristic but relatively nonspecific histopathology with a usually prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Herein, we describe for the first time the presence of characteristic hyaline droplets in the cytoplasm of Kupffer cells on routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) sections in AIH. The medical records and pathologic material over a 20-year period (1992 to 2012) were reviewed from children with AIH (n=30), hepatitis B virus (n=30), ...

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a complication seen in many very low birth weight infants. Severe ROP has been called a "marker" for severe disability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and severity of ROP among infants < or =1250 g birth weight treated in the Special Care Nursery at Women & Infants' Hospital over a period of 7 years from 1994 to 2000.This was a retrospective review of ROP data combined with neonatal follow-up data. Plant lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant, renewable feedstock for the production of biobased fuels and chemicals. Previously, we showed that iron can act as a co-catalyst to improve the deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass. However, directly adding iron catalysts into biomass prior to pretreatment is diffusion limited, and increases the cost of biorefinery operations. Recently, we developed a new strategy for expressing iron-storage protein ferritin intracellularly to accumulate iron as ...
